True enough. In fact, AU doesn't mean anything anywhere else but in the U.S. "What would you say to a little Stempelglanz?" "Hello, little Stempelglanz."
For me, NGC is much better overall than PCGS....PCGS has been sliding for years now and the bubble has burst. And the ones that posted that people are just paying for plastic are right. So I say let them...leaves me more money for the "COIN" I want (in an NGC holder) and NOT the "Holder" that I will let others pay for. But remember one and all, this is JMHO. Peace.
I like Carl Jr's tagline: If it's not all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face. Lol something like that
I prefer NGC over the PCGS. I feel their grading is more accurate. But I really just always buy the coin. I bought a very nice MS Walking Liberty in an ICG slab for underprice just because no one trusted the slab
Personally, I don't think the PCGS slabs are nicer looking than NGC. Quite the opposite; I like the white background of the NGC slabbed coins. Also, I feel that NGC grading is as competent as PCGS. I've sent PCGS coins to NGC for crossover and guess what, they didn't! Some good arguments here as to why PCGS is preferred over NGC, I esp. like that registry set argument. JMHO.
One other thing about PCGS. I was in a shop (CA.) and there was a buyer picking up NGC graded coins. The owner told me that the buyer works for PCGS. The coins were modern commens graded MS and PF 69. The owner knows that I purchase NGC graded 70 coins for my modern collection. The owner also said that the buyer would be submitting them to PCGS for slabbing and they will be graded 70's. Hmmm?
I'm doing a little experiment - I'm sending in the sweetest 1916-S Walker I've ever seen for a "quasi-crossover" from ICG to NGC. At the advice of many on here, I cracked it out of the ICG slab, thereby hiding the grade, but I left it IN the inner soft coin holding portion of the slab, thereby easily identifying it as a past ICG coin. Should be interesting ...
PCGS is objectively worse when it comes to world coins, to the extent that I question why people even bother submitting world coins to them. The same goes for exonumia. PCGS doesn't even bother with type attributions in a lot of cases. I prefer PCGS for some series because their grading is more accurate. In general, NGC is a more accurate grader for pre-1900 US material, especially when it comes to grading varieties. Post-1900, PCGS is significantly better. NGC also has superior customer service. So the advantage to PCGS is what? Post-1900 US and the registry? No thanks. Plus, their latest generation of slabs is terrible and the slabs don't even fit in most cases.
Wow!!! you are now the 3rd person that I heard this from...I was at a shop in Dallas and almost everything you just wrote was right on target. That is weird...to say the least. Whether it is true or not, now at this point is irrelevant as just the thought of this happening is quite a shock!!!! I guess the old saying applies here..if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...guess what!!!!!! T-That, TT-That, TTThat's all folks!!!!!
I haven't made a goal out of studying 70's in various TPG slabs over the last ten years or so, but all the same when the occasion arises I check them out in Heritage images, a dozen or two at a time. So any opinion I offer has to be anecdotal, since I've only looked at - maybe - two thousand over the years. Based on that admittedly small sample, I believe PCGS is the only TPG which gets 70's consistently correct by my standard, which is: If I can see a flaw in a fullsize Heritage image, it's not a 70. They're far from perfect, you still see dogs in PCGS 70 slabs, but there is far less barking in PCGS' slabs than NGC's. And neither ICG nor ANACS have a clue. It is only with reluctance that I say this, because I'm otherwise not a fan of PCGS at all.
I've known the owner for years. No reason for him to lie to me. I think he was just trying to enlighten me or warn me about PCGS and NGC graded coins. And 'Yes" I believe you. I go to Vegas and I see a lot of Elvis'.
Really? I've seen enough 70 slabs from both NGC and PCGS where the coin has a visible flaw, AND enough 69's where I can't find any flaw, that I've given up - I refuse to believe there's a difference. Certainly not one I'd pay more than a very slight premium for. As a general rule, I try to stay away from ANYTHING slabbed that's in that 69-70 spectrum. I prefer them in OGP. Don't I care that I have the ultimate, and the next guy doesn't? No, not in the slightest. I'm not wired that way.
