It’s giving us something to bond over. I can’t stop her from growing up unfortunately but hopefully this will stick with her and maybe one day when I’m gone she will find a coin on the ground and check the date and I’ll be a memory in her mind.
I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but get a red book, if you don't have one already. A wealth of knowledge for the same price I spent on lunch yesterday. https://a.co/d/0fQbd6Za (shortened link to the red book on amazon)
See if you have a coin shop nearby. Coin shop dealers are typically very friendly to their younger clientele. You can get her some sleeves to put her coins in. They are super cheap and turns a spending coin into a collectible to be admired.
I’ve been looking and I think the closest is like 1.5 hr away. I told her we could get a good amount and make a day of it.
You should consider entering @lordmarcovan's giveaway: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/lordm-giveaway-113-pick-your-prize.412680/ It ends on July 1st.
I like @Mr. Numismatist idea. Our esteemed @lordmarcovan is such a generous soul and often his giveaways tend to lean heavily toward young and deserving collectors…. And I’ll add this too. This sites owners are insistent that all discussions here be geared toward and appropriate to young folks. They won’t tolerate any off color comments… All I am getting at is that your daughter would be fully safe if she wanted to post questions here.
Awe Awesome Thank y’all for being patient. I’ve been on some forums that turn into shark attacks but this one seems family friendly
Ahh, good on you, @Randy Abercrombie. I wondered how the new member found my giveaway. His daughter now has three entries in the random drawing, so we’ll see what happens! @Palos1390 - we won’t leave it entirely up to chance, however. If you’re comfortable doing so, send me a private message with your mailing address, and I’ll send her something. At the top of the page, go to “Inbox > Start a new conversation”. Address your message to me, @lordmarcovan. Numismatic Regards, ~Robertson (“Rob”) Shinnick (“LordM”) PS - how old is she? Like Randy Abercrombie, I was (almost) 11 years old when I began collecting- in 1976. I had several generous souls give me cool old coins. Still have a couple of those to this day.
Do like me. I've been interested in coins for over 50 years and getting a Metal Detector changed my life in so many ways. She'll love it! Especially at an old park or school. Do your research and I recommend 2 must have books:
Awesome will do! She’s 11! She’s my Side kick and partner in crime. I’m a k9 handler and she’s got the gift with dogs. So between my dog and these coins we are having a blast!
(Note to self- look for one of the old Irish sixpence pieces with the wolfhound on ‘em… there might or might not be one in my bulk stash boxes…) Dogs, huh? We have 4. And 13 or 14 cats. Eleven is a perfect age to start collecting. I was just a month shy of my 11th birthday when I started. It was Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. The adults asked me to set the table. I found a 1936 Mercury dime in my step-grandmother’s silverware drawer while doing so. She let me keep my treasure. I still have it, 48 years later. That one little coin started my adventures in the hobby.
