I think the 1940 has an error on the head side. Looks like maybe an extra “0” I’m new to this. My daughter and I have been digging thru change and now have a jar of old coins I’d like to get a value on and maybe sell.
Your basically looking at face value on these. Enjoy going through them with your daughter. Welcome to CT.
Hi, welcome to CoinTalk. Your nickel is damaged unfortunately. If you are searching for errors and varieties it's very important to read about the minting process. It will save you a lot of time and disappointment. Here's a good place to start: https://doubleddie.com/58201.html Happy Hunting!
Okay thanks for the quick responses. So the weird mark is just damage? I have a few more I’ll post and see what yall think.
Sorry if this is too many but there’s more lol if they aren’t worth anything no big deal. She’s had a lot of fun finding the old ones and now getting to see what yall think. Thank yall for your patience
More circulated coins. Nice starter coins. Keep trying and have fun. Don't forget to edit your Pics. ( Crop, enlarge pics and click Full Image when done). Welcome to CoinTalk!
Not knowing her age, and if she is just interested with coins, use the dates to look up what was occurring during those years in history. If some of the coins cover your years, you can have some fun discussions as to the differences you went through compared to yours, most families don't know about their parents struggles and rewards. I see it now. That area was also hit by something. If it was an extra 0 someone would have to deliberately add it to the die. If this did happen there would by many coins like yours because every coin struck with that die would also have a raised "0". But, this is not the case. Notice that on your coin the "0" is incuse (lower than the surface) and all the other letters are raised. If a 0 was added to the die it would be raised like all the other numbers/letters.
Welcome. The buffalo and wheaties have some value over face - maybe 3x face each? More of a swap meet/garage sale item though.
And this is EXACTLY this what makes coin collecting so great... Sit with your daughter and have her imagine a time where there were no computers, air conditioning, television, cell phones, Beatles or hip-hop... Fears of impending wars.... These are the people that spent this money. Our ancestors that were far more concerned with sending a son off to war than they were about their wireless connections.... Appeal to her imagination. Create stories with your old coins... This is what makes coin collecting the greatest hobby in the world!
She’s 11 going on 21. The digging thru piles of coins is something we can do together that we both enjoy. Neither of us know much about the coins other than what’s looks cool and has an older date. Our little collection is growing and now she gets all excited when she finds one and gets to call or text me about it while I’m out working. She’s been asking if I think any of them are worth anything so that’s what brought me here. She has a liberty dime from 1918 I need to post and some other neat ones.
That is so great. I been collecting coins since I was eleven and it was a very similar scenario with my old granddad digging out old coins for me. It started a fire that still burns fifty-odd years later. I can hold an old coin and read a better story than a book... And what on earth can be wrong with collecting money!?
