I the short time that I have been collecting and cleaning Ancient Coins I have accumulated quite a few. I have been organizing them for some time. I now have indexes and a number system that helps me keep track. There are three index binders that have the index and data sheets. Each coin has a data sheet with details and photos. There is one binder with all the completed coins in 2 X 2’s. There are two binders with WIP (work-in-process). My coins have very little monetary value. They have kept me busy, enhanced my education and given me many new friends. Thanks everyone for all the help over the last few years.
Very impressive your set-up and number of ancient coins you now have. I can remember when you stated you were going to start looking into ancients.
You've made more progress than I have. It seems like I spend all my time purchasing coins and digitally cataloging them. I did purchase dozens of 2x2 sheets a while back but I still need to photograph, weigh, and measure hundreds of coins. I then have to print flip inserts and data sheets, purchase binders, and organize them into the binders.
That organization is ridiculous. I feel like a TV show hoarder. My 'system' is some wheaties are in a book in the bedroom. Other wheaties are in a roll in the SDB. Other wheaties are in a jar......somewhere. And still other wheaties are scattered on my desk, on the filing cabinet and in a Tupperware. Yet some are in ziplock baggies in the attic, somewhere. The good thing is, I feel like I'm in control of the 'collection'. @Inspector43, I say this with the utmost respect and admiration. I love hearing and seeing the stories of your collections, from the days of you scouring the local businesses cash registers and counting and rolling coins on the bank vault floor. You new foray into ancients, and this filing/organization system is awesome. Kudos on a job well done. Thanks for sharing with us.
Seems like you and I might have the same issue: Deriving much of our collecting joy from the storage, cataloging, and record keeping processes! Impressive setup you have there.
@Inspector43 Now that you’ve done your ancient collection I’ll be looking forward to having you do mine.
Mine and your collecting methods seem the same. Old Whitmans in one safe. Loose coins in another safe. Slabbed coins in the third safe, bathroom and nightstand.... Not to mention coins on my desk, drawers and cabinets of my office.... I really should do better... Someday, someday....
Retirement. That is my excuse, I will do all of this stuff in retirement. This frees me up to continue chasing and buying now. Coins are just freaking EVERYWHERE, Work, Home, SDB, etc etc. Best I can do it all of them worth a bit are in the SDB.
Well done! I love your dedication to neatness and consistency. When I started out I did the same thing with binders, printing it out the ruler names on a laser printer and the whole nine yards. If you get into photography it'll open up a whole new dimension of fun and you could also go virtual. Rasiel Ps. This is an "at a glance" snapshot of my Roman collection hosted on Tantalus
