Pointing out the limitations of a reference is absolutely reasonable, however things like: sounds more like pointing out your perceived limitations of posters, especially when followed by
The only part that was unreasonable was the last quote and was due to my misinterpretation of your previous post. For that one you have my apologies. The others, no... and because it was a generic (yet factual) statement not directed solely at you.
I'd have to say, using only a cpg, is like going into a gun fight with a knife. With internet, there are a number of other ref. with pics. Sorry op that we gave you an alternative to your books. I"d say if you don't have to buy the book there is a few more coin examples to buy.
“Using only the Cherrypickers’ Guide is like going into a gun fight with a knife” might be an over statement. Probably closer to say “going into a gun fight with only a pencil.” The OP did it right, with Kennedy half dollars short of sending them into Dr. James Wiles for attribution it is best to post decent pictures here and ask questions. The next best is Dr. Wiles’ book on Kennedy half dollars published in 1998 but since the book was published the number of listed die varieties have nearly doubled. Larry and a few other collectors could point a person in the right direction regarding Kennedy half dollar varieties. The Cherrypickers’ Guide had good intentions, not sure about other series but with the Kennedy half dollars there are so many different varieties that are close that it is almost impossible to tell apart by just two small pictures. Perfect example of this is the OP thought his coin looked like the pictures of the FS-50-1971S-103 on page 319 of the Cherrypickers, Guide but in reality the 1971-S FS-103 has a much strong spread as illustrated on Variety Vista (especially on TRUST): http://www.varietyvista.com/12 Kennedy Halves/DDO Detail Pages/1971SDDO008.htm I agree with Larry that Caleb got this one right as the 71-D DDO-001.
I may be pickin because in the original post he said cherry pickers guide. That is a popular ref., that doesn't exactly promote more varietys. I am not in dis-agreement with the out come of this thread. It absolutely looks like DDO-001. The op was simply sent to a couple of different ref. it seemed he took them in refusal because it wasn't in cpg. That is all folks. By the way, the cpg I believe sends collectors down a road that shouldn't be popular, It gives the novice collector, a sense that their is only those variety's, and none other.
Where in any part of this post have I even hinted at refusal of any reference that has been offered??? and because it wasn't in CPG???
I never took it that you did. A few members have tried to make this thread into something else. Nice find by the way.
Thank you. I appreciate all your help with this one, your photo of the die gouge below the A in STATES sold me on your call as 71-D DDO-001. Thanks to @atrox001 too for helping confirm this in my mind
