Sorry man I really feel for you and had i known you have soo many locked up I may have not even bid. If I ever decide to part ways with it you will certainly have first chance at it. I love these coins and would love to see them all in one collection.
Its called planchet annealing and happens because they are tumbled while being heated up in a giant drum before striking to soften them up. Normally these marks go away after being struck on a silver coin but since Ikes are CuNi clad and much harder they often dont.
Chatter is often found on MS Ikes and many MS Kennedy dates. Not to be confused with surface hits after striking.
Im not confused? You can read about it here at the link below scroll down to where it says Annealing. http://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=840
I dont disagree with you on that lol.... Im just trying to help those who may not understand why they happen and are frequent on the series.
Well taken...I use a few simple terms while grading, which if were explained in detail, would be like reinventing the wheel. I like the term "CHATTER" as it came to me from previous threads in this forum.
I have bought these before and gotten some really nice toners only thing is there is no guarantee on how nice the coin is total gamble Ill update when it gets here.
That one looks like it could be a really nice toner, even if it ends up being on the dull side. Fingers crossed. Can you take an updated picture when you get it? Looking forward to seeing its true appearance. Here is my latest Ike haul. I got a '73-'78 mint cello run to begin Dansco #4 as soon as Dansco #3 is finished.
Lee, did you get it directly from Nixon? I mainly was curious about how these were distributed. I know the hearsay story, but I was hoping for first hand info. It's a known thing. I think 71 is the second most prevalent. It had to do with the Mint packaging gassing out onto the coins. You'll notice (in hand, as opposed to when looking at juiced photos) that the "toning" (usually silver-sulfide) is really "haze" (silver-oxide).
Couldn't find a spare minute today at work to place a bid and missed this beauty. Someone got a really nice 71-D for $21 in my opinion looks under graded by a point.
Im hoping this shows up and is better then the bad photos the seller had. That would make me feel better.
