This is a 1943 Washington Quarter that I picked up at the PNNA coin show on Saturday. I keep finding myself looking at it over and over. I personally think it is a potential monster. Enough so, that I may send it in to PCGS or NGC to get graded. But before I do something like that, I would like to get some of your opinions. This coin might be a good candidate for one of my animated GIF's, but for now, here's a couple of images.

Just to point out a few things. The line going from the eagle's wing to the M of UNUM is a small die crack. The small white lines on the eagle's breast are raised and are small die scratches. The white line coming off of the eagle's right wing tip is a die crack.

What about the mark beneath Georgie's earlobe. Is it a scratch on the die or the coin?

I'm not familiar with the grading proclivities of PCGS or NGC where Washies are concerned, but it sure looks like it could be a 67+ or better to me.

I'm looking at what appears to be a mark on the reverse over the first "L" in "DOLLAR".
What's it look like in hand?

I'll bet an animated GIF would really showcase the die cracks. I think MS67 would be the basement.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Normally, I'm skeptical when people say "look at this super high grade coin, do you think it will get MS-73?"

However, I think this time you might have done it. I really don't see anything holding this back from at least 67. I really hope for your sake that it grades even higher.

Above 67, the price on this date has an incredibly steep jump, so a 67+ or a 68 is unlikely (67 is $450, 67+ is $2300, 68 is $14k).

So, yeah, this one is definitely worth sending in.

That line under George's earlobe is the seam between his jaw and neck. It's a specular highlight.

You sir, have an eagle eye!! I had to break out my loupe for attributing varieties to see that one. It appears to be a possible strike through by a hair, because of the way it does not reflect light. It does not optically behave like a scratch or a hit where metal would have been raised. It's kinda odd.

This quarter was in a flip labeled MS-65 which I usually take with a grain of salt, but when I looked at it under my 3X loupe at the show, I just couldn't see anything that would make it a 65. It was a no question set aside to purchase coin. I pulled a really nice '41 out as well that was marked as MS-64 on it's 2x2. That one in my opinion is right behind this on in quality. I've come across conservative graders, but this guy has really under graded some of his coins. :)

Thank you for your opinion. Coming from you, that really helps my confidence in sending it in. Part of the reasoning for starting this thread was because I looked at all the trueviews on PCGS's website of 1943 Washington Quarters. I started with the MS-67 images and compared them to this quarter in hand. I kept telling myself that this quarter is better than that. When I finally came across images that were comparable to this coin was in the MS-67+ range and even some of those were not quite as strong as the one I have. So I think this Washington is going to have to take a journey to Newport Beach or Florida here pretty soon.

Assuming the luster is as good as it look, I don't see it as less than a 67. Great find!

I grade it MS-WANT. Nice coin. If it comes back any less than 67, your next submission should include a white cane and a pair of dark glasses for the grader.

Here is an animation that shows the cartwheel luster and gives you a nice feel for the surfaces.

Am I hallucinating, or does this coin have lines all over the surface moving in 15,000 different directions. This is NOT what metal flow looks like.

I think the surfaces have been altered to say the very least.

The animated GIF file appears to show significant chatter on Washington's bust, which I think makes it max out at MS66. I would probably grade this piece MS65+ based on the newest image assuming that there are no problems.

With this said, I agree with @mikenoodle that the surfaces in the original photo look very odd to me, but I cannot quite put my finger on it. I hope it hasn't been lightly cleaned.
