I use Gerry Fortin's site as reference for seated libertys. He also has a page with some for sale. http://www.lsccweb.org/Contemporary_Counterfeits.htm
That is a very nice '96-O. My highest graded is a VF-35, slabbed. I have examples that probably grade VG at best so they did see decent circulation. Probably in the 1930s etc when silver was 30c or so an ounce.
Here are a couple. First the 1818 14 star continuous wreath. R-8- three known, sold for $10,350 1848 small date there are about 10 known, several struck over other large cents This is the finest know specimen, sold for $7,188 There are a few others.
Is it a loopless R? I'd like to see some pics if you have them. I'd like to know what the diagnostics are for a non-loop Henning nickel, other than general "looks counterfeit" type diagnostics.
here is one of mine: 1823 Contemporary Counterfeit 1823 Contemporary Counterfeit Listed in Davignon 1st Edition Not a rare example, but kinda neat:
I have an 1838 version of this same coin! It has a lettered edge as well, but for this date, that is not correct.
another: 1833 Contemporary Counterfeit Okay, folks, I couldn't let this one stay behind: Beat up & all, still a nice really bad fake:
that date is brutal, Frank! Did you identify this as a counterfeit because it didn't match the ones you had as a kid???
It is the loopless R, I have it in a SDB, sometime I would like to put all this collection together and image it. In nickels I have everything from the 1916-S counterfeit, the Hennings, several lesser known buffalos etc. I tend to specialize in forgeries from the teens for a particular reason, especially 1916 and 1917 Halves and quarters.
That sounds like a great little collection. I'd like to see some examples of the 1916 and 1917 halves and quarters, too! Are any of your 1916 quarters convincing at a glance?
The 5 1899-O Micro O Morgan dollar die pairs identified in VAM are not counterfeit. A genuine 1899-O VAM 6 was the host coin for the counterfeit micro O coins dated 1896, 1900, 01, 02.
Here's a few of my counterfeit Gold coins I inherited from my grandpa. Real gold, but counterfeit. The $10 Indian fooled a lot of people until I sent it to PCGS.
"messydesk, post: 2540404, member: 1765"]The 5 1899-O Micro O Morgan dollar die pairs identified in VAM are not counterfeit. A genuine 1899-O VAM 6 was the host coin for the counterfeit micro O coins dated 1896, 1900, 01, 02. Simple typo, 1896-O's seem to be most common. Thanks for correcting this.
Those are really good. All I see that's somewhat questionable at a glance, not being an expert on these coins, is a tool mark near the N in UNUM on the $10 and some surface depressions on the $20.
There were enough obvious signs on the $20 that my LCS knew it was fake and I didn't even have to send it in. Look at the spot in front of her lip, and the horrible spot on the reverse by UNUM. The only tipoff of the $10 is the bad rim all around. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
