Have you never read a Tolstoy book before? 89 pages of photos and comments will be much quicker to breeze through than 1200 pages of Tolstoy. At least Anna Karenina was a nice novel to read. War & Peace... ugh.

The lines behind the back of 'ol Ike's neck do not exist in reality. They are a product of my poor photograpy

Love your golden proof...I have one turning gold in proof...in a few years he will really look nice. Also several ms66s in gold tone. I saw a 73-d in 66 last year in Vegas for $325, but I didn,t buy it...what a mistake...Never seen one since that even came close. It had beautiful gold background with light orange and pink surrounds on both sides. These never last very long!

I'm not sure his proof is actually gold, so much as the light balance is off for the indoor lighting being yellow.

These are so often found nicely toned in OGP for a few dollars over melt. How can you go wrong?

Nathan, that golden Ike is golden, right? Can,t go wrong if there,s no milky haze on them... Even some of those ugly ones can be dipped and the haze is gone...The OGP Brown Box Ikes is a "ticking time bomb" Coins should be removed before the damage begins, and either graded, or put in capsules or 2x2 snaps. They will all eventually be ruined if left in OGP. The silver will react with the non-inert plastic backing. G S A dollars in OGP are O.K. Other proof coins in OGP from 1968 thru 1989 will also destroy your coins. If they are turning milky, dip them to remove the haze. These OGP are also non-inert.

Thank you, I didn't know this information. Yes, the golden toning on this is absolutely beautiful.

I thought is was...some others always have to question or downgrade these conversations. I just let it be. For your own benefit, watch Rick Tomaska on RCTV, he is as far as I,m concerned, the number one authority, above and beyond all others, in U S Proof coinage. His prices are a bit high, but I watch his show for informational purposes. So far, he has taught me more useful info. which I can,t find anywhere else. This is where I learned about poor Mint packaging in the early modern proof era. I,ve found his info to be truthful and non bias on many different subjects. He is known as the "Cameo King" in proof coin collecting, not to mention many other numismatic subjects. With Rick,s expericnce, and that of a few other dealers and some experts in this Forem, I feel confident in making my own decisions.

Chas, does the issue with the OGH packaging include the late 80s prestige sets?

That is a good question....I don,t know. Can you look at some and see if there is any haze around the rims? I don,t own any of these...but I would like to know. I,ve noticed the OGP silver sets have also started to haze, especially the dimes... I,ve cracked them out and carefully placed them in snap locks. The 92,s were the worst and fewer problems as they progress. I will assume that all will eventually develop haze. I live in a desert community where the air is dryer, but still keep them in air conditioned space. I,m wondering if the problem worsens if in a humid area? or if the problem is in the OGP. I plan on inspecting all of my OGP sets on a yearly schedule to gather more info. Rick Tomaska claims that sets after 1990 are safe, but I suspect that after enough time passes, problems may arise as in the silver sets. I suspect the newest OGP may be more inert in composition compared to older issues. On the other hand, if there is a lower frequency of problems, they might be due to improper handling or airborn contamination at the Mint, and no problem at all with packaging. Also, modern coining involves much less hands on if any at all, which may nearly eliminate contamination of both the coins and the holders. Sounds like a lot of fuss, but I,d like to learn and not guess the facts.

The only haze I've ever noticed in a prestige set was from 1992. I thought I saw some on my 1991 set, but it disappeared after a few years.

I can't wait to get my submission back, so I can post more Ikes. :p

BTW, do you plan on getting the above regraded/attributed by NGC or DIVA?

Cool coin, but why did you post the same thing in different threads?

Man I was wondering who beat me! At least it went to a reputable member, not some random dude out there who won't appreciate it. :)

In any case, if you ever, EVER decide to sell it, please let me know, or please re-consign it to Shane, as I'll see it there. Oh, and I beg of you, PLEASE don't crack it. DIVA it if you want, because that is a very nice talon head specimen, but leave it in the ICG holder.

Of the roughly 150 or so that are claimed to be part of this collection, I currently own over 130 of them. I bought the bulk of them in a deal directly with Shane when he first consigned the collection, and I've been trying to piece together the stragglers as they come up, usually through him. If you've lost an auction on one of these, chances are it was me that was bidding on them. And yeah, I put crazy-high reserves on them, simply because there's so few left and I'm trying to make sure I get them all. Last night's haul of the other two cost me almost $500, so I'm kinda glad to a point that I lost out on the one you got... thankfully the eBay Bucks will cover most of it.

Don't worry, you made me pay pretty good on the FEV... ;)

My goal would be to nab as many as I can, and eventually I want to re-submit the whole collection to PCGS, and eventually try to get some research done and a full story writeup done over at ikegroup, if I can find some folks to help me out.

I like the term"CHATTER" for hits on planchet before striking. Typical on many M S dates in many different series coins.
