Hello Guys. Today is my first day of starting a set on Standing Liberty Quarters and I'm wondering on opinions of grade on this one in particular. I assumed it to be an average XF-AU Grade and started comparing the strike quality to others of the same year struck at the SF Mint. I noticed it to be another year of high grade examples lacking in strike quality on the central devices. I know it's no MS68 and it does have a knick on the obverse, but the eagles wings and overall luster/toning make me wonder. Any thoughts?
I like it. It has a nice, original patina. It's a little hard to see how much luster is remaining. There is some softness on the shield rivets and over Liberty's torso. The head is hard to see well. It might have a shot at a FH designation, but I can't tell. I think your call of borderline XF/AU is about right, depending on luster and in-hand appearance. It's a beautiful series, but the 1916 makes it tough to get them all.
I'm in the AU camp, it's a really eye-appealing piece of this lovely series. I see a lot of remaining luster. Congs
The softness on the torso and the rivets are kind of what I noticed being slightly mushy to nonexistent on even some of the Gems I found on HA. I think AU is probably going to be the grade only because I have no idea how many hands this has gone through and what the graders will find that I cannot. My thoughts on a better, even MS60 grade were based on the strike quality for this particular year/mint and also how defined the sharp lines are inside of the eagles wings still. I notice most AU's have lost that from circulation. Idk...thanks guys Hopefully it can pull a High AU and I'll be happy.
