I found this 2000-D Cent yesterday and I am no expert with this type of error but it appears to me that it has been struck through some debris, perhaps a wire. What are your opinions?
Not to sure if it's a Struck Through Wire only because the C, E and N in Cent still has a bit of a raised area within the space. I think that if it were a strike though it would be a complete space. This is my opinion.
It could be a strikethrough. If it were a gouge, I would expect to see raised metal along the edge. Chris
It is defiantly incuse. I know most of you guys hate close ups which is why I refrained from including them in my original post but here goes. These are just to show you how clean the edges are and that there is no deflection of metal as you would see in most PMD. Across the letters C, E and N there are some slightly raised areas, just enough to see like a ghost image, however on the E the line is unfortunately mostly filled with dirt and some corrosion so it appears to be not as deep as the others. I hope these images help. Also note at each end, the taper at the termination points. In my past experiences this taper is caused when a wire or similar debris while under great pressure is compressed which forces the metal of the wire when there is nowhere else to go to protrude outward from the ends creating a taper.
Your close-ups are exactly what was needed to show that there is no raised metal along the edge. Yes, I still believe it is a strikethrough. Chris
Also looks struck through to me, nice find. I would love to find one some day that still has the foreign matter still embedded in the coin.
That would be cool! That would also make the forever question "What caused this?" easy to answer. Over the past few months I've found 3 other strike throughs but they are tiny in comparison. I almost tossed this one thinking at first glance that it was a scratch. It is the first one that I have found that is this noticeable so I guess I'll keep it. lol Thanks for all of your help!
