Hello everybody, I emailed Daniel Carr about this idea and this was his response... "Thanks for the Cointalk link. A "1964" Franklin half dollar is something that I will definitely be doing at some point. My plan all along has been to eventually make a fantasy-date coin for every hole in a 20th century type-set folder. The 1964 Franklin is one that I have had on my "short list" from the beginning. For the type set, the Kennedy coins will be "1963" and/or "1975". I'm hoping to get my new engraving machine before doing these. It may take several more months before I get it, however."
Could we have a conspiracy theory on the 64 Franklin half that is related to the conspiracy theory on the 63 Kennedy half that is related to the conspiracy around the 63 assassination? We need a movie that has me so totally confused by the end that it pails in comparison to the need to strike native american and presidential dollars.
Here is a good question were there whitman franklin half dollar folders made in the early 60s and if there were did what was the end date of that coin folder? Since they did not know the series would end in 1963 at the time did they have a place for a 64 dated franklin half dollar?
Is there any chance you might have a picture of that or know someone who does because I had no luck what so ever trying to find a picture of Franklin half dollar folder with spaces for coins beyond 1963 and if it does exist is that worth some extra money over a normal Franklin half dollar folder with the end date being 1963?
everything is worth something to some and nothing to others... I wouldn't "invest" in error coin folders. I would keep any I got for free (or close to it), but I wouldn't pay good money for them
Here is another good topic , there is a story on reddit about someone finding a 1964 clad quarter in a roll full of 1964 silver quarters in the year 1965, do you think this could be possible ?
Absolutely. 1964 dated quarters were struck into the spring of 1966. Clad quarters were struck beginning in September of 1965 and dated 1965 - the mint was striking both silver and clad and it is not unlikely that a blank could have gotten stuck in a hopper etc. There are clad dates, 1965 especially that are known to have been struck on silver blanks.
My email is edited Id be happy to send a pic of the 64 franklin if someone can help. I got it in school from some promotiotion or something
Mike.... Likely that is a fantasy strike. Franklin halves were not minted in 1964.... Folks tend to not look at these old threads. Start a new thread and include a photo of your half and you will get some informed replies.
No, it would not be worth any money. When the folders are printed, they usually have a few extra years printed. The Franklin was a very short series - in the beginning of 1963, there was absolutely no reason to think that it wouldn't continue through 65. So, all the albums printed would have had the next couple of years.
As to the original question, @Roger W Burdette is the person to ask. If anyone knows the answer, he would - he's done extensive research on that period of mint history.
Lot of excellent conversation about a Franklin 1964. What if you're in possession of a 1965? No one has been here on this string in five years. Opened a box that was left to me by my father 25 years ago, 1999, on the anniversary of his passing. In there is a set of five proof coins in acrylic case. The Franklin is a 1965. Have no idea who I should even show the coins to?
Welcome to CT, Gregory. If you have a local coin dealer, carry it to him and ask his opinion. Secondly, show us a photo. Sure would love to see it.... And before you resign yourself to thinking you have a one-of-a-kind treasure, think about what would have to take place at the US mint for this to occur. It just isn't a likely scenario for this piece to have been produced at the US mint.... However there are folks out there that do privately strike "fantasy" coins. And I would be far more inclined to think this may be what you have.... But please, start a thread and show us a photo. We would love to see it.
I vote "NO." The mint personnel knew by mid December that the Franklin Half Dollar would be replaced by the Kennedy Half Dollar. Frank Gaspero and Gilroy Roberts were working at breakneck speed to have the JFK half dollar ready in time. If a 1964 Franklin Half Dollar exists, Dan Carr made it. The coin shown in the post above does not look convincing to me. The reverse is too mushy, and the letters look "fatty."
