I found some on Vcoins but not sure where price should be. I know condition is everything but if possible I was wondering if someone could post a few coins and the appx value in today's market. This would give me a guide so as not to over pay for one. I did find this one for $450 Not sure if that is fair under or over priced. Thanks
Good lord, don't pay $450 for that train wreck. I wouldn't pay $80 for that junker. You should just be patient and wait for one to surface, at a decent price. It happens. Mine was $127 total on eBay, but it's an error and probably scared people away. I wanted it bad for the error because it's rare for errors like this to occur in this era. Even Curtis Clay said it's a special find. Tiberius (14 37 A.D.) AR Denarius O: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, Laureate head right, R: PONTIF MAXIM, Female figure seated right, holding sceptre and branch. Lugdunum Mint 3.75g 19mm RIC 26; BMC 34; RSC 16
FYI, this coin is one of the most counterfeited coins, in ancients. From the photo, it looks to be okay. Hopefully, it's cheaper than the OP coin.
That is the thing I have no idea what the value is. I did a search on eBay for sold coins of this type and they went from about 350 USD on up. So I am a bit lost on value and the only ones that sold that were cheaper were heavily damaged.
I paid $390 (includes buyer's fees and shipping cost) for this NGC VF in Auction. Some darkening along the left/obverse and so forth kept it on the cheaper side, but I really like the bust! Compared to auction prices, I've hardly ever seen a fixed price coin on V-Coins, Ebay, etc that was reasonably priced. I look at V-Coins and such for research purposes sometimes, but the prices are usually laughable.
Heritage has a whopping 9 Tribute Pennies going off in this week's E-auction (Out of a total of a measly 43 Roman coins ). Even if slabbed coins aren't your thing, the results of this auction could provide you with a better rounded perspective on the prices that you should be paying: Link to sorted auction page
There is nothing rare about the Tiberius denarius. The price is driven up by the “tribute penny” story, which is probably not accurate for the coins that circulated in the areas around Rome and west of there.
Exactly. They're pretty much just as common as a silver Gordian III, but not Gordy's prices. I'm very happy I waited almost 20 years, to get the one I have. Plus, it's unique, even if it isn't some CNG show stopper, I could care less.
I am bidding on a few on Heritage. eBay is way high for what they are offering. Vcoins some are extremely high priced. Someone scooped up the one on eBay I posted here. It was IMO a good buy at 334.
A reputable auction house - but not a place for cheap buying. If you are a beginner - post the coin before you pay here. Ebay is a place of many forgeries. Also for this coin type!
Funny, eBay, Vcoins all are very high on the one I am looking for now. There was one on eBay that was 340 and it sold before I could get any good posts on it. The ones on Vcoins are very high. Some asking a couple of thousand for. Same on some other sites I have looked at.
I understand your intention - but your main focus should not be "solely" on the cheapest possible Tiberius coin. Otherwise, you could easily end up making a bad purchase. There is a very high probability that you will find a very genuine Tiberius from a reputable seller or auction house. At least you will get a guarantee there. And yes - that will cost a little more than on eBay.
Herakles Numismatics is selling several at vcoins. You can take a. look here: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/herakles_numismatics-71/ancient-coins/Default.aspx
I am not looking for the cheapest. I have seen many that are IMO not for my collection. Damaged or real bad strikes. I am looking for a fine and up for around 350 give or take. I have found a few but as I said they are OTD faster than I can research them. LOL . Its the quick and the dead.
