If any of you haven't heard of this phenomenal collection that will be going up for auction, I urge you to visit the Stack's Bowers site and give the September preview a look. Bruun was a wealthy Danish butter merchant who left his amazing collection to the Danish National Museum as somewhat of an insurance policy should their collection be damaged/lost. If,100 years after his death, this didn't come to pass (which it didn't), the collection was to be sold. Lots of extraordinarily rare Scandinavian coins are represented with a stunning gold 19th century coin in MS69! Lots of gold, specimens, proofs etc. The collection consists of over 20,000 objects, so obviously the cream of the crop is being displayed. Take a look, you won't be disappointed.
As a collector of Danish coinage, I have to say, that collection is INSANE!!!! Auction Preview - September 2024 The L. E. Bruun Collection - A Corpus of Scandinavian Numismatics Part I Maybe I can afford to buy one of the lesser pieces when they go on sale.
That's what I'm hoping for! I think I might be able to get a lesser Schleswig-Holstein piece to compliment my German States collection.
Curious to see if he has any Early Dated (pre 1501 A.D. dated) coins. I've seen pictures of a gold Noble or Triple Noble in the previews. More interested in the silver pieces, the Ortugs and half Ortugs. There are several varieties for each denomination.
Hi everyone. I'm glad to see folks are taking an interest in the upcoming L.E. Bruun collection. Pieces in that collection are are some of the finest specimens in existence and will be beyond the reach of most of us, mere mortals. As a high end world crown collector, with a focus on Scandinavia, the Bruun collection is of the HIGHEST interest for me. There are a couple of pieces I'm eyeing but I'm going to have to sell my organs by the pound to be able to afford some of them. We'll see... perhaps lady luck will blow us a kiss
I have a collected a few pre-19th century Scandinavian crowns but in that age range high end would be quite scarce. Do you have any Scandinavian crowns in your collection that are that old?
Yes, I do and quite a few . Nice to see that you do have a few pre-19th century crowns in high grades. I find that coins manufactured after the advent of die hubbing to be much less interesting as the variations introduced by the humans involved in the process are removed. My collection includes: Denmark 1660, krone, VF Denmark 1672/1, krone, NGC VF 35 Norway 1777 Specie Daler, NGC XF 40 Sweden 1782 Riksdaler, NGC AU 55 Sweden 1790/88 Riksdaler, NGC AU 53 Maybe we should start a new thread to show off photos of our Scandinavian crowns. Edit to add: I see you've starting posting photos to the world crown thread
Just looked at the live auction today. These are selling very well. Unfortunately my pockets aren't deep enough!
You can say/write that again! Even though there was only 1 coin of interest to me at the auction, it hammered for 66000 EUR, which is way more than I would be willing to pay for any coin, even if had enough money in my bank account to pay for it (which I don't).
I haven't heard. I think it was a huge collection and they would auction it over a couple years. But, I bet they'll sell the big money coins rather quickly. I believe there are lower value coins available and I'm not sure if the auction house will sell them in stand alone auctions or integrate them into a world coins showcase or something.
@Joshua Lemons Thank you for the information. I'd like to see if there are any 1478 ortugs and half ortugs. Several varieties per Bob Levinson's book.
I received the Stacks Catalogue a month ago. My fav. is that AV Noble from Johann I 1496. I would have to sell 10 % of my collection to afford it The ONLY thing that I hate about this great hobby is one can never afford the creme de la creme coins.
Mine was this one: https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/l...ducats-1702-stockholm-mint-karl-xii-ngc-au-58
Karl XII was the best military leader in Great Northern War/ too bad that he was out gunned/ numbered by his enemies. Would have been even better had the Swedes annihilated the Russians at Poltava in 1709.
