Not a trick. My sister-in-law regularly checks the dumpster near her apartment and found these about a week ago: 1882-S Morgan and an 1892 Indian Head Cent. The Morgan is mis-labeled in a Bullion Exchange holder from long ago. The holder is cracked so I removed the coin. It will be put into a capsule. Looks to be VG condition, value: about $40-44... The IHC is G4, value $4.... Crazy, Huh? People forget where they've squirreled away stuff and it ends up getting thrown away! Comments welcome...Spark
Nice finds! I worked in a recycled newspaper paper mill during college and all sorts of crazy stuff was found after being tucked away in newspapers. Cash, gold and silver jewelry, diamond rings, coins. Most of it would survive the pulper and get spit out in the clean-out pit below. Cleaning that pit was a nasty job but the possibility of finding treasure made it tolerable. Dumpster diving is probably pretty nasty too.
This one is 6 times the size of a regular dumpster and is not used for kitchen garbage. The apt. complex management and residents use it to dispose of broken furniture: couches, chairs, tables, mattresses. Sometimes there is an instance of eviction, and broken or not everything not moved out goes into the dumpster…Spark
What a nice find! That’s for informing us that your Sister-in-Law is a Dumpster Diver. Lol, really it’s amazing what one can find. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
Nice find, not a coin, around a year ago someone got kicked out and a lot of stuff was on the curb. The big thing was 250 dvds all in cases. Some were even unopened it was crazy, got $200 total for them all.
Both rough, but pretty amazing finds for a dumpster dive! Who in their right mind would throw away 100+-year-old coins, I wonder?
I imagine we'd all be shocked at the proportion of Americans who would just say "oh, those are no good any more, you can't spend them".
I would imagine most of the Great Unwashed general public would make the opposite assumption: “Wow, these are from the 1800s. They must be worth millions!”
UPDATE/CORRECTION: Bullion Exchange seems to be incorrect. New information reveals these slabs and serial #’s identify with the BRADFORD EXCHANGE….see post from 24Sep24- Ike dollar ripoff thread… …if you put the serial # in the internet search engine window your result is a line of 8 of these slabs for sale on FleaBay and Etsy…Spark
