Rim thickness question

    This penny had an unusual thickness in the rim. When I looked closer I saw that the opposite rim actually was quite a bit thinner. Not sure if the pictures are gonna show this, but I was hoping someone could let me know what this is called. Another chance for learning

    Sal, that is definitely not a tapered planchet.

    That is a simple and common misaligned die strike. It caused one side of the planchet to look a bit thicker due to the higher pressure strike on that side. A finning of the rim.
