Mike, what makes this one odd is that there is a rim on both sides. The problem is that they are not the same size. I could understand if the coin had been spooned, but the rim should be the same size on both sides. I'm not suggesting that this was a nickel planchet, but the reverse rim really looks normal to me. That's why I was hoping to get a better close-up. A silver quarter should weigh 6.25gms; a clad quarter should weigh 5.67gms, but the OP says that this weighs 4.3gms. It doesn't make sense. Chris
I like the way you're thinking... I was focusing completely on the OP's question as to it being struck on a nickel planchet. The weight would help determine what planchet. If a quarter planchet, it's PMD
Someone altered a genuine coin. Much of the original metal is gone so it is light. Either spend it so someone else can get a thrill; keep it in your collection as a novelty; or take it into a bar, pull it out to pay the check and make a big thing about it. Hey anyone know what this is? Then, sell it if anyone makes an offer to buy it as they are trying to "steal" it from you at the price they offer!
I can't wait to see what you bring back from the Collectorama in Lakeland. By the way, there is a nice bar & grill a couple blocks away but I can't remember the name. Chris Edit: I just remembered.......Harry's Seafood Bar & Grille
I will take a few more when I get back home, I was taking them at the angle initially to try and capture the rim.
Thanks for the tip. I think you would rather see the junk I'll take to the bar in hopes of a sucker sale! My momma always said: "Practice what you preach."
I read an article a few years ago about coins being made into rings by sailors during World War 2. This was done by hammering the edge of the coin with a spoon. I tried it to satisfy my own curiosity and gave up soon after because my wife kept complaining about the noise. The progress that I made though looked almost identical to the quarter in this photo. So "ring coin" would be my guess. V Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
