This coin is about to be sold in a few minutes at auction. I am not interested. But I'd like the gallery's opinion. To me, it looks at best AU 50 considering details. Maybe 53. It has great luster and is in a holder that supposedly was a tough grade back in the day. What do ya'll think?
Did Morgans ever have strikes this weak? Also, some weirdness going on in the tail feathers. I have no idea.
Just an extremely weak strike, as usually seen with most "O" mint Morgans. This coin has zero wear, so it is technically mint state.
I didn't pick it up. Gun shy. I did bid it up a hair, cost someone more money though. I really was spooked. I've never seen a MS Morgan with a MS bald eagle's bald chest though. The fubar with the tail feathers intrigued me though. Probably a rare VAM knowing my luck since I did not bid hard on it.
Sounds like you’re regretting your decision not to spend more. At the time it made sense but second thoughts can be nerve racking.
Why would you kick this holder, and at the same time think that 5 and further down the line holders are superior, Someone needs to do some sharpening on their grading skills.
Yes. New Orleans mint especially was notorious for their weak strikes. This looks typical of their product.
Look at the logo upside down on the reverse. It is a Genie Lamp. Used to be the logo of ANACS when it was owned by ANA.
Full luster = Mint State The early O mint production produced many weak strikes. How much this should affect grades is a matter of debate, but generally up to about MS64 strike doesn't affect the grade much, if any. That said, look for strong strikes when choosing coins for your personal collection.
I didn't particularly care for the coin, but the disaster that was going on in the tail feathers sure did have me curious as to what that is and what caused it. That alone is the reason I gave it a half hearted bid. If you click on the reverse photo to enlarge it, I think you'll see what I mean. I think those using phones for internet miss a lot of details.
Not kicking the holder. I'm aware of their soapbox holders. I have some. Never heard it called a genie lamp. Primarily wasn't interested because I have several slabbed MS 1884 O Morgans, actually too many, and much more sharply struck. That date and mint is extremely common, but I have a habit of buying too many things on impulse.
