Technical name is reposse coins. That really isn't correct though because reposse is the creation of a three dimensional image in metal buy hammering it into a mold or die from the back. In the case of these coins it is a single pressing of a shaped punch into the correspondingly shaped die. It is really more like embossing than reposse.
Wow, that's REALLY creepy. In fact, it's almost as creepy as, well, err, umm, most of the Presidential dollars.
