My Peace Dollar Exhibition - pictures are up!

All the photographs are from Wikipedia and (I believe) Public Domain - but none are being sold - merely represented. I think I'm legal. No harm, no foul - right?

Your usage as a public educational exhibit is the prototype use case for "Fair Use." No legal problem here.

@Brett_in_Sacto My only reason for asking about the picture was because I thought it was very cool. I think you're absolutely fine displaying it! As a matter of fact, you should add the picture above of the Peace model to your display.

I didn't buy anything. But my wife bought a 1914 French Lorraine medal.

So the results are in... I took....2nd place.

I'm happy about that - first show ever. I'm kinda bitter (and I probably shouldn't be) but I lost to the display below... Which really kinda ticked me off - since there isn't a coin in the entire exhibition. But to his credit - he did a very neat job of putting it together. It was more educational - but NO COINS!!!

But the comments on my grading summary sheet were "too many coins, not enough details" and so BAH. I kinda knew it. I had some stuff written that didn't fit, so I left it out in the mantra of "picture worth a thousand words." And besides, it wasn't too technical, it was about displaying the works of Francisci. Well, the pictures weren't enough alone.

Everyone liked it, I got lots of compliments - and even though I didn't get 1st place, it was still a blast putting it all together and watching people look and learn.

More important than anything was completing the set and marking the accomplishment with the exhibition.

I am on to my next quest which should start to play out coming next spring.

Sorry I missed the display. My 3 year old had a school inservice, and I thought I would do more fun stuff than a coin show on Friday, she has been to quite a few shows already.

Very cool display you made, and congrats on second place! I'm not sure what the rules were for the show you entered, but paper money is definitely part of numismatics and worthy of consideration. In a major show (like the exhibits at FUN) the paper money will be a separate category, but again, not sure what the setup was at your show.

As for your display, a few comments/questions. I realize that your results have already come in, but this seems like a collection that is worthy of showing off many more times in the future:

1. Were/are you limited to a certain number of cases? It seems like you have a lot of material. Spread it out, and let everyone see everything clearly without crowding.

2. I really like that you are bringing in photos and other material besides just the Peace dollars. This extra type of stuff really elevates it to an "exhibit" and not just a really nice collection.

3. I agree with the comments that you should have some sort of details, descriptions, or information. I believe I suggested you add this sort of information to your registry set previously (which you didn't seem to like that suggestion). However, exhibits should be educational tools as well as pretty. With more space (using a couple more cases) and spreading things out, you have the opportunity to write some explanation cards and put them in there as well.

4. The other pieces that few people know about (such as the duck) really need explanation the most. I'm guessing that the vast majority of people viewing your exhibit had no idea what that was.

5. Do you have plans to acquire any of the other works of Francisci? He did quite a few medals and plaques which may integrate well into your exhibit.

Overall, really cool set and congrats on second place. Hope to see where this exhibit goes in the future!

 

I've seen that counterfeit exhibit at my local show. It is an interesting subject. Great job on yours though. A mighty fine collection.

 

Extremely nice set. Now I'm tempted to start a Peace dollar set, since I've gone about as far as I can go with Morgans.

The winner's display/topic certainly looks interesting, and I'll probably try to find that DVD as I like WW2 stuff too, but IMHO yours was better. And more on topic for a COIN show.
