Actually Canadian/ Newfie/ Colonial coins are attractive. Its the modern post 1967 era when the RCM starting designing God ugly coins.
I really only collect hammered coins with more challenging scripts to read, so for the past good few years I've been concentrating on Mughal, Indian Princley states and some of the ancients from the subcontinent. Working out what is going on is part of the attraction.
I have a preference for coins from countries that I have visited at least once. So even if I can’t read the characters I have some interest in Japan, China and India. My biggest countries of interest are Russia, due to my knowledge of Russian and the time I have spent there, along with Germany/Austria and UK. I avoid coins from Arab countries because not only can I not read the text or dates, but many of their coins contain text as the main design element. “Countries” like Niue and Tuvalu are not worth spending money on, enough said. Even Canada has gotten carried away with NCLT.
Canada coins were great until the mint started putting out crapolla that comemmorated anything that walked, could be read about in a book, written in kindergarden, or celebrated on the calendar. They have ruined collectors who actually have an compelling interest in numismatics. Anytime you have coins sitting in a display case in the waiting line at Canada Post, you know the definition of granny bait.
The USA, communist China, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, South Africa, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, modern India, Pakistan, etc., but to be honest, modern coins in general don't interest me, I am mainly interested in collecting gold coins that are over 100 years old from countries that are of the most historical interest to me.
I generally avoid Franklin Mint (FM) coinage. The artistry is usually lacking (in my opinion). I wouldn't say I actively avoid FM coinage - but I almost always dislike it when I see it (and can recognize it from a mile away). To each their own.
I have some FM Proof Sets/ gold coins from 1974/75 when I bought them. I think the opposite these coins are beautifully designed/ set in attractive presentation etiquettes. However/ I moved into classical gold in 80s/ never looked back. My fav. period "Baroque: 1650-1720s. Coinage struck by Germany 1933-45 is very bland/ boring. Matter of fact Germany struck awesome coinage 1400-1871/ under the Empire coins were nice. However after 1918 only the 1923/ 1930 AV 25 Gulden (Danzig) were beautifull. Modern German coins are ugly/ ultra modernistic. The Third Reich did produce nice designed postage stamps/ occupied territories/ Germany proper.
I think exceptions to any generalization can always be found. I own some FM coins, but in general they bore me (unless they have horses on them ). I would also argue that there are some beautiful modern German coins, but most are very "harsh/industrial" in their designs. It's all a matter of personal taste in the end.
Those of communist Yugoslavia: https://sima.bidinside.com/en/lot/1850/yugoslavia-repubblica-socialista-1965-1992-/
Too bad he was taken out at Dvar/ 1944. Had Otto Skorzeny commanded that operation/ it would have succeeded. After the War he ordered tens of thousands of Slovenian/Croat/ Bosnian Muslim POWS to be murdered. Interred inside old mine shafts/ then blown up.
Imagine I had a Serbian lawn client in 1995/ worked for NASA/ space program. He was a partisan during War/ he felt ashamed since his side did barbaric stuff to captured POWS. His number one hero was Otto Skorzeny/ even though he was the enemy. He admired his daring/ swashbuckling exploits/ esp. getting Mussolini off Gran Sasso/ taking Nikolas Horthy from Budapest.
