So, let's assume that you were in the group at NGC searching for my coin, and you were told to look for a Kennedy half dollar, what would you do?

That will come out in the next thread I promised to post. For example, we all know the "second tier, third tier, and fly-by-night services" all get far fewer submissions than PCGS or NGC so they HAVE FASTER TURN AROUND TIME. But who cares! They do not have the reputation and market backing of the top two services.

I AM TRYING to ram down the throat of some stubborn folks that: ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL - collectors and dealers want their coins back ASAP. IMO, no one can argue with this! That's why I tried (unsuccessfully) to take out any and all of the variables to get what I thought should be obvious - SPEED is MOST important. I know for a fact that TPGS HOLD COINS for shipment on occasion so as not to interfere with their "tier" speed and cost.

Not saying this thread was implicitly about them but by omittion. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but with the wonky way the question was posed and his response to Kurt along with his always cheering them on it's a good bet it was, in part, about them. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers though. Enough said

I disagree. Speed is not most important. Grades higher than you were expecting are :p

Seriously though. Quality and consitancy of grading and most importantly market acceptability are the keys

No offense taken! It's just that I'm pretty good at sticking my foot in my mouth, so I always try to clarify what others have to say before I do that.

A better way to examine this is something called "ranked choice voting" where everyone assigns an unrepeatable number to each factor. If there are 7 choices, everyone assigns a 1 to the most important and a 7 to the least. Low total wins. Problem is - it's a massive pain in the butt to do.

Just saying, for me, Speed's rating is gonna stink.

Easy, track the order backwards. Since it was an error and it sounds like it may have been the only error in the group, I would check with my "in-house" error expert (Dave Camire) to see if he had the coin and had not finished authenticating it. Now for you to get the order in hand AND A COIN WAS MISSING something REALLY UNUSUAL HAPPENED. Perhaps the coin was not in the box at the slabbing station (should have been caught there). Not in the box at the QC after slabbing (should have been caught). Taken out some where in the process for a photo and not returned. Everything is on film. Who knows what happened for sure. The important thing is your case was an exception and I'll bet things were done "in house" to make sure it cannot happen again AND YOUR COIN WAS FOUND.

Personally, I think @Insider should have known better to try to make this thread a logical discussion of limited scope. It just ain't gonna happen on these forums!:stop::stop::stop::stop:

I may ask you in a PM later to help me with my next thread on what is most important for a TPGS.

So, if I understand what you are asking is pretty much that the companies are IDENTICAL in every which way except for speed of service.
So it is essentially PCGS and express, regular, and economy services?

    Quick list of attribute candidates:

    High market value
    Cost of service
    Speed of turnaround
    Security/quality of physical slab
    Aesthetic slab qualities
    Liquidity for resale
    Special Collectable labels
    Grading consistently through time
    Grading consistently across series
    Number of varieties attributed
    Grading consistently across nations
Do ancients well or at all
    Longevity in the field
    Market acceptance
    Ease of removal if desired
    Trust for the ownership
    Dealer focused
    Collector focused
    Friendly staff

See? It quickly gets huge. Just alleging that "speed is really important to people" is a risky statement, IMHO.

That is WHY I tried to remove (WITHOUT SUCESS) all the variables and prove that turnaround is important.

What kind of creature would dispute that? And I realize I'm posting this with the full knowledge that it's not important to me. Sometimes being aware when you're the atypical case is important.

Just an example of how not important it is to me - I once had a NGC shipment waiting for me at my PO box for more than 10 days and I didn't pick it up. I knew the grades from the website, and it just wasn't important to have them in my hot little hand.

Did the same with a shipment of "won lots" from a Stacks/Bowers ANA sale. In that case I knew exactly what they looked like from my time in the lot viewing room before the sale.

I have no patience. So speed of service is important to me. If that is the sole limiting factor between the TPGS, then of course, the company with the quicker turnaround time gets my business.

I already lost my cool once today and it cost me a new job. All because somebody was out to lunch and I didn't want to wait. It is bad enough I waste my own time, but, someone else wastes my time. I become a very angry old man with an uncontrollable, knee-jerk reaction mouth. No patience.

In my experience, this is an all too common attribute in this field. I fight to keep it down all the time. That, and some really cool blood pressure meds, helps.
