Posting a quick video update This is something of a 10 minute rambling of: - how this coin was found - the plan to send it to PCGS - and all the luck surrounding its survival after being found. Spoiler don't store potentially valuable coins in a cardboard box in a location where water could reach it... Was lucky enough to find this but equally lucky enough not to have lost it to the elements because I was being lazy with coin storage.
Quick update PCGS just billed and emailed me the grade is ready. Not sure if that indicates the coin was authenticated as a mint error, or just a really expensive 1983 zinc penny or other. Going to let this one be a surprise when it arrives and I unbox the coin. ~JobIII
If you only paid for grading that's all you will get. For errors and varieties you HAVE to pay for the attribution fee. Did you?
I think so. I chose mint error on the form and detailed the mint error I thought the coin happened to be. Jeez now I am a bit worried.
Another one was found MS65 (auction here: https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...lanchet-31g-PCGS-MS-65-RD?utm_source=coinweek) Just the current best graded version to date. This auction should be fun to watch as it nears the end. Calling all auction snipers
Interesting how poorly struck it is. The GC coin is similar. I'm guessing strike pressure is lower for zincolns or something.
According to a book I have the zincs were struck at 31 tons per sq inch down from 41 for the copper based ones.
It's really cool to see someone find something like this that's actually the real thing. I don't see that very often.
