Just added to the Giveaway Gallery as a new prize option:

Bolivia (Spanish Colonial): silver 1-real, "cob" type, no date (circa early 1700s)

This is a somewhat substandard example, since it lacks any portion of the date on the flan, but it is still a silver cob with all the romance of the Golden Age of Piracy, with which these coins are often associated. Based on the style, it was likely struck at Potosí in Bolivia, perhaps in the 1730s. It comes with an old paper envelope which indicates someone paid $1.00 for it in 1943.

In shopping for interesting pieces for my CoinTalk giveaways, I came across this coin on eBay, and was intrigued. However, I don't know much about cobs, so I posted discussion threads on CoinTalk and Collectors Universe, in order to glean some useful information. Collectors Universe member "realeswatcher" was particularly helpful in this regard, confirming the ID as a Potosí coin from the early 1700s.

Once that information was determined, I went back to eBay to purchase the coin, only to find that it had just sold! I then forgot all about it. To my astonishment, a week or so later, it arrived in my mailbox! CoinTalk member @paddyman98 had bought it and shipped it to me as a surprise gift. So whoever wins it in a future giveaway has him to thank for it as much as me!

Sadly, I accidentally cut the corner off of the old 1943 paper envelope when I opened the package, but I have taped that back together.

If any of y'all already posted an entry and wish to change your prize choice to one of the recently-added items above, that's fine- just remind me later, if you should happen to win the drawing. You're totally allowed to change your prize choice at the end.

I'm gravitating to your new addition of the 1864 bronze 2-cent piece. I don't have a two center in my 7070 yet. That would be a very nice addition.

Thanks for your amazing generosity, Rob.

    Say hello to Pinot.....

    20240326_120025.jpg

Funny Pinot story. When we first installed the hot tub, Pinot had no idea what it was, what we were doing, or where we went. He was frantically barking and running around the hot tub while we were lazily soaking in it. His frustration building. He climbed the steps that allowed him to get the top of his head about a foot below the edge of the tub. Still barking and exhibiting his ever present Yorkie anxiety he leaps and flies over the edge of the tub landing in the water with a splash. My wife and I were just as shocked and startled as poor little Pinot. We scooped him up, dried him off, and laid a towel on the filter cover (where you see him perched in the pic), for him to 'join us' forevermore. Whenever we tub it, he kicks back with us in his reserved seat. Believe me, it's much more relaxing for us too.

I did too, which is how it ended up in my shopping basket back in January when I was buying stuff to expand the giveaway selections.

I was shopping in the $25-50 range. That one seemed a solid purchase at $45.

This is an extra entry post for @paddyman98.

(The least I could do, in gratitude for his donating that silver cob mentioned above.)
