Good evening! I was helping my dad sort out and categorize his quite extensive world coin collection and came across this silver coin. My dad has very few ancients and neither of us are very familiar with them. It was given to him from a friend. It is a little smaller than a quarter. I thought it would be easy to Google lens it, but it is proving not to be that easy. First, is it real? Second, who is on the coin? Third, what denomination is it? If needed, I can have him pull it out of the plastic holder and get better pictures. Thanks!
Cornelia Supera, the wife of Aemilian. A rare coin. It’s hard to tell in the plastic but it doesn’t look right, and likely fake. But… you never know. Although the odds, metal and portrait make me feel doubtful… some of the reverse looks convincing. I’d take it out of the plastic and post better photos anyway. Well, I am unable to get my dad to send me more pictures. I will post them if I ever do get them. I've bothered him about it every day since Friday. I think he is worried that if this coin is worth more than a few hundred dollars, my mom will want him to sell it.
No, tell him not to worry. It's worthless. Forgers go after the low hanging fruit. They took a $10 coin of Salonina like this one and Dremeled over the name. In this case they dirtied it up in an effort to hide the handiwork but it doesn't fool anyone. Sorry bud :-( Rasiel
No, if you look a bit more carefully, notice the first C before CORNEL. These are things that can't be "dremeled", as you would have to add letters that were not there before. This Cornelia fake is very common (see Slavey examples) so no need to go to an insane amount of work for fakes that are commonly available.
Whether fake or not, my own curiosity is piqued and I would like to get some clearer pictures. I am disappointed with myself for not taking better pictures initially...
