Can anyone tell me weather or not this is genuine?

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by Paran0IdPsych0, Mar 29, 2024.

  1. I'm considering adding this to the collection but need help determining if it's real? And if so, who is the person on the front? Anglo Saxon??

The reverse appears to be based on a genuine Byzantine coin commemorating the foundation of Rome, but I have never seen anything like this. It shows Romulus and Remus but with a legend reading Rex on top? Nothing like it found on acsearch.

A Google reverse image search suggests a coin with the exact same shape was sold on Ebay before. I suspect it is a fantasy piece. Personally I would avoid it.

I vote fake - I don't even know what it is supposed to be. Coins like this - flat surfaces, very crude artwork - show up on eBay all the time, mostly out of Eastern Europe.

I have serious doubts because I’ve never seen a Roman reverse like this on an Anglo-Saxon coin. But you should really ask the input of someone who collects such coins.

The weather in my parts is 67 degrees & partly cloudy with wind out of the south @ 20 - 22 mph.

Now, whether or not it is genuine is dubious, as several others have responded. Also, it's apparently on eBay & from Europe, so...;)

Yes, rare ruler and rare iconography. If one were to appear on the market it would likely be a 6 figure coin

Surprising. Whoever faked the coin must be well-read in the numismatic literature to come up with a copy of such a scarce (and relatively unknown) coin.
