Not my cup of tea, but a nice lot nonetheless. I really do like that Tetradrachm in the corner!

Sweet display, Deacon .... ummm, so these coins are merely sitting on a table in your church? (and the "folks" get to be interactive and ask you about and hold your examples?)

    ... pretty cool

Very attractive and interesting array of biblical coins!!

A few years back I was forced to sell off my collection and that included a significant number of biblical types, such as 'Pontius Pilate' etc,. Well, since Jan-2015, I started again but I still need to add a few of those you posted.

I'd love to hear what the members of your church have to say and how they react....Most people I know simply glance at my coins, say "Oh that's nice" and proceed doing whatever they were about to do. LOL

EDIT: I guess I should post the 'tribute penny' of Tiberius (a bit rough) although some claim it was actually a denarius of Augustus:

An observation of mine: Many folks may be introduced to "ancient" coins through Judaean issues which always seem so crude, both in appearance as well as condition. Those people will "ooh" and "ahh" over the 2000 year old coins, and be amazed it is from the Biblical Land. In their minds they will place-mark that quality and and look of the coins against the coins that they use everyday in their lives. "AH!" They think: That justifies the 2000 years difference in coin quality and condition.

However, it would also be cool to place contemporary ancient coinage from areas near-to or adjacent to the Biblical Lands... just as comparison to the coinage of the world around this area of the world. There has been some incredibly gorgeous coinage made for several hundred years BEFORE Judaean coins, as well as gorgeous coins contemporary to that time period. I many cases, the ancient world made coins MUCH more gorgeous than even the coins manufactured today.

It would be interesting to see how folks would place-mark their contemporary coins in their minds vs. Judaean vs. other Ancients during that same time period.

    Sweet coins, everyone!

I'm super jealous, Deacon Ray, especially of the Herod prutah. All of those are on my wish list. lol

Here's a similar one of Porcius Festus. He is the only Roman procurator to be mentioned in the Book of Acts.

Thanks, Erin! I've been ordering them from my dealer in Israel and it has been a rather slow process.

That's an excellent point, Alegandron! The contempory Seleucid coins are beautiful! The power of the Biblical coins is more about the history that they represent than their design and quality. I've been studying and focusing on the Judaean coins for so long that I see nothing but beauty when I see them. Even in their crudeness.

Thanks for posting the tribute penny image! I have two collections really. I have one that I display in a glass showcase at my church. That one is locked and untouchable to church members. I have a second collection that I allow folks to handle that has the same type of coins as the locked one. I also have a velvet bag full of grade c coins that I give away. Mostly pruta and lepta.

They asked me to do the children's story several months ago. I told them the story of the widow who gave all she had. Then I gave 2000 year old coins to all of the children in the church.

I give out coins to anyone at church who' s going through tough times and feeling down. I'm convinced that the coins have an uplifting effect on people of faith.

Your dealer's got some sweet coins to offer, Deacon Ray. I bet it's worth the wait when they finally arrive!

    Does he have good deals?

The Pontius Pilate coins of quality
The Pontius Pilate coins of quality (solid and centered strike) can be rather expensive!

There's a theory among some that the Wise Men were Nabataeans. I have no opinion on that yet.

Thank you for your encouraging words, Ajax!

Yes, I think his prices are good but I need to warn you about the wait time. It can take up to 6 weeks before you'll receive your coins.

These particular ones will be going into my locked display shelf. I do however have many of the same coins in the hands on display.
