That was my thinking when I first saw the coin and put in my maximum bid of 3500 EUR for it, but the problem is that the more I look at it, the less I like its condition, so I am worried that I will end up paying 4200 EUR for a coin that is in okay or solid condition at best, if it was in top condition, I would have no problem paying that much, but as it stands, I would much rather spend that money on a top condition Mughal Gold Mohur of Shah Jahan I and/or of Aurangzeb.
In any case, in the future I plan on only putting in bids on the last day of coin auctions, because: 1) That way I won't put in bids like the one above, where excitement over finding a rare coin was put ahead of its objective condition. 2) That way I won't have money tied up in an auction for weeks or even for over a month (such is the case with the current Jean Elsen & ses Fils auction), so I will be free to spend that money elsewhere. 3) On the last day it should generally be obvious whether or not the coin will go for a reasonable price, so if it is obvious that it won't go for a reasonable price, then I won't even bother bidding.
It would be nice to go back in time to 1936 or so with todays $$$$ in your pocket/ bid on coins. You could get a lot of 100K-400K euro coins (2024) prices for under 1000 RM (200US) back then. Would be awesome. I would go for Transylvanian 10-100Dukaten.
I don't like the idea of time travel in general, and in any case I don't think it would be fair to the people who historically won the coins.
Your post got me thinking about something else, namely it is a known fact that a lot of artwork was stolen during World War II and never recovered, but what about coins specifically? How many of the high value coins won at auctions in continental Europe prior to and even during World War II were accounted for afterwards?
I got outbid on the other coin I was bidding on at this auction, somebody else won it for 550 EUR (my maximum bid was 500 EUR), I am really interested to see for how much the Caliphate of Cordoba Gold Dinar of Abd al-Rahman III will end up going for.
This is another coin I would appreciate getting outbid on: https://elsen.bidinside.com/en/lot/29322/allemagne-hambourg-ville-libre-av-20-/
No the AV Real d'or Joan II went for double my proxybid. But I found that the AV Mancuso from Ramon Berenger 1035-76 from Catalonia/ Barcelona Mint did not sell/ so I brought it as unsold lot for 1200E. This is finest of 31 known exs.
And out of the 7, this is the second one I hope to get outbid on: https://elsen.bidinside.com/en/lot/27726/wisigoths-sisebut-612-621-av-tremissis-/
I have to watch my $$$ supply/ I have three in mind all are already bid up to 5500E/ the 1488 Demi Noble Brabant is fav. one.
