So tell me guys... what sets are you currently working on ? I'm working on a 1961 proof set (PR68 Cam / UCam, individually picked) in honor of my brother's birth year an 1899 proof set in honor of my grandfather's birth year a set of AU58-MS62 Indian quarter eagles 19th-20th century US type set How 'bout you ?
AU Lincoln 09-29 BU Lincoln 30-58 PCGS MS-66 Lincoln 40-58 PCGS PR69 DCAM state quarters F/VF Large cents every year 1798-1855
Still working on a BU Franklin half set, most with FBL. Stuck on 1953P. Can not find any I like and I have looked most everywhere in a 50 mile radius. Just need to upgrade that one and 1948P, 1954P then I'm done. Working on a complete Walking Liberty half set and just need 5 more. Working on several complete Mercury dime sets minus the 16D.
I haven't purchased the album yet, but I am going to start working on a 1938-1961 Jefferson Nickel Set. I am going to fill most of the holes with finds from roll searching. I already have already found alot of the 50's nickels, a few of the 40's nickels, and 1938 (in F or VF condition).
I had to think about this for a while. My answer....just pick up the Red Book, and thats what I'm working on. I just buy whatever I like, in no particular order. Maybe someday I'll eventually complete a few sets. Guy~
Mmmmm... I should clarify. The 1899 set is proof for FRACTIONAL coinage (50c and less), but business strikes for S$1 and gold.
I'm working on a 1964 - 1988 quarter set. It's the only album I bought. I need a better 1970 and a 1966 D quarter.
Lincoln cents; 09 - 34 Unc (missing 11 with 8 being AU) 35 - 58 MS66 or better missing 1946 (35-S is only 65) mostly NGC (41) with 6 MS67's so far. certifies S mint proofs. I have 25 so far. Mostly I am trying to get a secondary set of Lincolns up so I can trade for an unc s-vdb. I am not sure it is there yet, but it is real close.
I like to focus, been working on a full set of Morgans for a couple years still need 7 one of which I will never get (1895 as if you Morgan collectors didn't know)so lets just say I need 6. BTW I call a full set of Morgans 96 but PCGS says 97. Anyone know what the hell the 97th is? "Could hell be any hotter than AZ?"
Here is a complete list of the 97 - list - Incidentally, the 1895 is not included, but it does have 3 1878's.
One of the cool things about this site... y'all taught me that a set is whatever the collector calls a set. No one can tell you that ain't right. Soooo.... a Morgan Collector can set out to collect only business strikes, omit the proof-only 1895, and still have a complete set - by his own definition. Don't worry - be happy !
Morgan vg or better Peace vf or better Buffalo vg or better IHC vf or better Proof ASE in boxes Barber Dimes, Quarters, Halves vg or better Standing Liberty Quarters f or better Hmmm.....Yeah, I think that is all the holes I have left to fill. Got so bored at work earlier this week, I actually made excel spreadsheets of each of what i need and approx retail values. I think I need another hobby for when coin collecting gets slow
Silver washingtons and buffalo nickels...........and morgan dollars (lol I know, good luck with that!).
I'm keeping my collections of silver American eagles and SAEs with the W mint mark going. Other than that, I'm really not a "set" person and just pick up individual coins that appeal to me or that are below what I think they are worth.
Currently the 20 Cent business strike set. A whopping 4 coins! Just wrote a check to pay off my AU 1876. Leaves only the 75-CC. Going for XF-AU. Pricey little set I must say. After that working on the 3 cent nickel set which I may actually complete in business strike. Then a half assed attempt at 3 cent silver, shield nickels and Standing Liberty quarters. Like what you said about definition of a set. I have no desire to purchase "proof only" issues. I want what was intended to be spent.
rlm............thanks for the info. I have the 1878's so "walla" I'm still 6 away from the complete set as defined by PCGS. Thanks again. "It's not how many breaths you take in life its how many times you are left breathless."
