The image posted is another half dimes I have just purchased . Sellers images and haven't received the specimen yet. Based on the images ,and other images related to the 1858 repunched date which there are 2 varieties , one inverted date the other just repunched . Which of the 2 varieties is this specimen , or isn't ?
Here's the image of a known 1858 inverted date repunched. l am trying to find a good image of the second known repunched date.
I voted no and think the image is too small to make a determination. I hope you just scored a cherry-pick!
The date on your coin is noticeably further to the right than on the posted example. If it is as clear cut as being only one or the other, this would suggest the other.
Hmmm... I've played this game on eBay, I have yet to win. Every time I "think" I see a variety I'm hoping for, I'm let down when it arrives. There have now only been 3 varieties I that I "knew" were a variety when I bought them, and they remained that way when they arrived. I really hope your's turns out to be what you hope for. I'm still holding out for one of those day's when my "thinking" turns out to be correct. My guess for your coin, is it could be. But it could also be a play of lighting and image compression that is playing tricks on you. I hope for you that it is the overdate.
And you see that's what makes it fun......As I love to cherry pick ebay as well when I'm a a show. Sometimes ya win....sometimes ya loose but when ya win ya do the happy dance!
Well, I think we can discount the Inverted Date via date placement. That's one down. When I capture the image and blow it up in post (as any cherrypicker should be able to do), I don't_quite_think I see appropriate date placement for at least the last 8 and likely the whole thing. The 1 seems a bit too far right - the serifs should be just about even vertically with the bottom point of the shield - and the last 8 seems to need to be (and it isn't) a bit wider-spaced, a bit rotated clockwise and a hair lower than the 5. So, my tentative conclusion is a "normal" coin. Keep in mind, I didn't know an 1858 Half Dime overdate existed before reading this thread. As usual, upon reading this I went out onto the Internet and found appropriate high-resolution images of each variety before even thinking about what I was looking at. If PCGS, NGC and Heritage are all wrong, then never mind.
I concur, date placement is off by a smidgen. I'd like to see what the other RPD looks like. I looked briefly for it, w no such luck. With that said, there seems to be something there, about halfway, beneath the digits on the OP coin. This should be interesting
Threads like this are my very_favorite_thing to read in numismatic fora. They're how I learn new issues, expanding my knowledge into areas I might not go on my own by being forced to do the legwork to attribute and/or grade something I'm unfamiliar with. Best learning tool ever. Like just now - I hadn't picked up on the "dented 8" and it wasn't mentioned in anything I accessed. Between Seattlite86's larger image and your posted book info, it's a bit clearer what we're looking at here.
Dougmeister asked me to get a part of a study group for varieties . And we have talked several times now on how to go about it. When collecting variety coins one must be opened minded as to what may or may not be. I recall your interest in a 1867 shield nickel on the way up to Gettysburg . The same nickel received 2 reviews by the same specialist and both came back with a different review each time. When you collect variety coins it's a little different then filling an album . Not that's anything wrong with choosing how one wishes to collect. Variety collector many times gambles on what they believe it to be from what they have retained from what references they have read. Again in a perfect world you have the time to do the research other times ya don't . That said if the specimen is worth the chance you roll the dice . Sometimes ya win sometimes ya loose . ie years ago I had a roll of 1955 Lincoln cents I found 8 ddo's not the famous one but the rarer one. Sent them into ngc all came back as 65 red all sold for over $750 each. When most would be looking at the date I was looking at IGWT. And that scored big time!
