The collectibles market is on fire. Coins have been trending upwards past 100 years. Case study/ I won a AV Fiorino di camera ND (1494) Rome Mint/ Papal States/ Pope Alessandro VI 1492-1503/ from Sincona in 2018 for 4100 sfrcs. In 2023 a similar coin sold for 5700euros. My coin had prev. auction tags back to Berlin 1936/ where it realized 25 Reich Marks ($5) So in 90 years it appreciated more then a 100 fold. Now look at US coin trends/ there are12 exs known of my coin/ a US Double Eagle 1857-S (9900+) recovered from SS-CA wreck. These sell for 6-8K in lower MS levels.
Thus it is a fact that world coinage 670BC-1899 are way under valued to US ones. I can see world material going up 10-15% every year.

I am actually trying to make a list of all of the gold coins I would like to buy, and there are currently 25 gold coins on the list.

I tend to just go by raw instinct. I might notice a coin in upcoming auction that I really like/ so I will bid on it. Like I love those Bulgaria 1916-18 AV 4 Dukaten Ferdinand I 1943 AV 4 Dukaten Boris III.
Sadly some "idiots" holed most of them. Really hard to find MS ex. with no hole. Always boggles the mind, how stupid people are. Same as you see a Salsburg AV 25 Dukaten were some dummy etched "XXV" on coin=value.
Well/ a coin like that should never be spent/ second why the mint did not place value (25) on coi reverse in cartouche.

That seems a little bit like complaining about all the Matchbox cars that would have been super-valuable if not for stupid kids playing with them and ruining their finish. :)

If you got paid with a coin, and you want to hang onto that coin so you can spend it, poking a hole in it and putting it on a string makes sense. And if a mint failed to put a coin's actual denomination on the coin, scratching its denomination onto it seems like a usability improvement!

But, yeah, it stinks for those of us who want to collect them. Unless we happen to find one of the rare undamaged ones, which of course is all the more valuable after what happened to its peers...

    Yeah but....
If I go out and buy a pristine 98 point 67 Corvette. I will baby that car, to keep it perfect. I would not drive on a dirt road/ or when there is salt residue on street. However, I think all of these massive gold coins were meant to be collected not used for commerce. Even the massive AR 10 Thalers had no value stamp. Some did like the Bohemia AV 100/ 50/ 40 Dukaten 1629 issue. This REgensburg AV 30 D/ and Basel AV 25 D did not have value. Why pray tell, cannot our modern mints make beautifull coins anymore? a91038aea20a8755c2f24a5f0277134b (3).jpg b0f402acc2d368a5fcf31aa4f0d63b5d (5).jpg

Aureo & Calicó will have many interesting gold coins up for auction next month, the Caliphate of Cordoba Gold Dinars are the ones that interest me the most.

I have seen MS exs go for $2500. These are not that rare.

Yes, even if the coin was in mint state, the 3000 GBP price would still be a little too high.

Danke schön:), I doubt that I will keep this pace up for much longer, and not just because of financial considerations:D, id est me wanting to keep my bank balance above a certain level, but also because currently there are only about 30 gold coins on my wish list, and at least 1/3 of those are either unavailable on the market in good condition (if they are even available at all!) or they cost more than I am willing to pay.
