Especially interested in English hammered and "celtic." Can anyone recommend a shop(s) in New York City? Thanks.
Stacks is at: 123 West 57th Street New York, NY 10019 Phone: 212-582-2580 I have bought from their auctions, but have never been to the store. Their web site has a write-up: http://www.stacksbowers.com/SellorConsign/Sell-Coins-New-York-City.aspx Their last ancient coin auction - https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/auctions/3-4Q9YM
Stacks told me yesterday that "We do have English hammered pieces from time to time here in the NYC store. At the moment we do not have any however we do have a selection of ancient and Byzantine pieces right now."
Dickinak, A year ago I had great luck with Lou's coins @ 185 6th Ave. My impression is that Lou is semi retired so you would have to call in advance and talk to him about what you are looking for to see if he has any coins in your area of interest. The neighborhood west of his shop on 6th is somewhat historic and has great restaurants. Best of luck
Stacks may have a good website that is fun to look through but their store is a different matter. The few times I have visited I was the only person besides the staff there. It gets a bit uncomfortable if you're not used to that, also most of their stuff is on the pricier side. You also have to be specific when asking for stuff as they have a lot of coins thats not in their display case. You can also try Paul Bosco at 149 Madison Ave. Call before you go. he opens whenever he wants to. The store itself is tight and cluttered, but he's got a lot of things. Prices are reasonable for a B&M store, you also have to be specific as he's got coins stashed away in the back. 212-758-2646
Man I'm jealous. I always see you guys talking about great coin shows and stores in the US. It sucks the only dealer I know of near me is Calgary Coin which is 350 km south of me and the one time I go to Calgary non work related it was closed. Bummer... but the zoo is nice
Yes. Strange guy but very nice. The one time I went he was sleeping upstairs in his office and forgot to lock the doors. I was inside with thousands of items all alone for about an hour. He's lucky that I don't have sticky fingers! Here is the website - http://www.pauljbosco.com/
there is also a husband and wife coin store in astoria, queens, the name of which escapes me. They were the friendliest coin folk i ever met!
This is my go to coin store. Unfortunately they don't really carry ancients, they may have a few from time to time but they sell mostly modern coins. The store name is Astoria Coins and Collectibles.
