How many graded coins did you actually get graded yourself?

According to the PCGS my orders page, 146. Though this number includes ~30-35 reholders back when PCGS had really good quarterly special to reholder with Trueview.

I have a couple hundred coins but leave the grading to Someone else, just don’t have
the time to be totally honest.

PCGS, NGC, ANACS slabs crack open just as easily as any other TPG. I spent over 20 years cracking out any TPG slab that I bought because I simply preferred them raw. It's only been the last 3 years or so that I have started leaving them in slabs.

But, but.... I have time. Send them my way. My little stash is all done grading professionally and non-professionally.
I agree. Better off leaving the work for someone else. thumb.gif

Off the cuff…. I would guess maybe 15-20 that I had graded. Most of those were very early pieces that I knew would come back with a details label, but because I don’t sell my coins I thought an “authentic” label would be helpful for my wife when she gets stuck selling my stuff.

I had my core collection graded in the early 2000s, which was something like 50 coins. When I was a dealer, most of the coins I bought and sold were already graded, but I probably had another 40 graded including some crack-outs and regrades.

Today I rarely have items graded. I buy items in the holder I want. The last items I had graded were some Confederate notes.

I've had about 50-60 graded. I do prefer to buy them already graded when possible. I send in about 10 coins at a time and have always used the economy tier as I haven't sent in anything valued over $300.

I've recently transitioned the bulk of the collection to slabs. I have no one interested in collecting in my family and as this thread proves, people love buying already certified coins, so when it comes time to sell I think it will be easier.

I really enjoy the whole process, purchasing raw coins then submitting them. I like the suspense of waiting on the grades.

No kidding there, especially when it comes to buying coins from M. Barr. Recently I got an 1868 Indian penny with corrosion, but easily fine details for $4.25.

Imagine turning $4.25 into about $30-40!

That's kinda weird if they crack open that easy. How much harder than a BCW slab would it be?

Of course, you could always take the grading labels out and put in a key date coin. :)

I honestly like getting random coin lots, potentially graded or ungraded. One example is at my local coin shop, getting 10 coins for $1. One was a 1972 English wedding crown, and another was a silver 1960 Greek coin. Talk about benefitting on randomness!

All I can say is, you might want to look out for some nickels like 1961-D and 1969-S among others. When they get to MS66 they become very valuable and a high grade one could easily get you hundreds of dollars.

Somebody else's problem. I seldom sell my coins.

I personally own a 1995 PCI MS67 quarter. I agree with the grade on it, and I got it for almost chicken feed. Here's my grading tier list:

Top tier: PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and/or ICG
Second tier: SEGS, PCI, UGS, and NTC
3rd tier: companies like INB, GEC, ENGS, and so forth
    Twentieth tier: SGS.

Note that most of these self-slabbers originated in the 2000s to the early 2010s, and very few are still grading today; information is scarce because I started collecting coins around November of 2022.

An authentic label will always help, especially when it comes time to sell it. For example, I've gotten a silver 3 cent piece w/VF detail for $8 before. If it had been certified, I would've paid around $40-50 for it.

Sometimes it's best to find the lowball prices and then get them graded. :)

UGS is actually a good grading service. Another thread states that two UGS coins went over to NGC for crossover grading, and while one remained at the same grade, there was another that actually got graded up a point by NGC. I believe that these people need to keep doing what they're doing, as they should eventually build up themselves as a reputable coin grader.

You'll find many collectors of US coins with this scale:
Tier 1: PCGS and NGC (and probably CAC Grading now)
    Tier 2: ANACS and ICG
    and that's it.

This is in the US forum, but I'm a world collector....shhhh...

I did recently snag a lovely 1/2 Kruezer from Bavaria for less than $14 after tax and shipping. It was beautiful. Came back from NGC as MS62... Pretty good for a coin from 1765!

My slabbing career is pretty brief.
In the 1990-s I bought the PCGS book and earned 1 free submission.
I have a friend who is a vest pocket dealer and is very kind to let me piggy back on his submissions.
I upgraded 11 of 12 Seated halves in 2008. The 1876 that didn't upgrade was the best of the lot.
I had 3 Seated halves designated as varieties.
I had Anacs put the variety on 15 coins that were already in slabs in 2010.
    That is it. James

I'd guess maybe 40. Several subs to ANACS, 2 to ICG, one to NGC.
Have a 1921 peace dollar that went MS61 at ANACS, I felt it should be higher, so tried NGC, it came back the same..

Personal collection that I still own, 400-500.
    For resale, probably 50,000-60,000.
