Yes, and it is the only French coin I have come across so far that I would be willing to buy if the price is right, but unfortunately I get the feeling that if it became available in good condition, it would probably cost at least 10 times more than I would be willing to pay for it:(...

I have one of Louis XI's generic ecus also:

    France Louis XI Ecu d'or
Gold, 27 mm, 3.34 gm, Perpignan Mint

    Obverse:
Shield with three fleur-de-lis on it and crown above
    LVDOVICVS DEI GRA FRANCOR REX
    Reverse:
Cross with fleur-de-lis at ends, mintmark 'P' in center (Perpignan Mint)
XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT (Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands)

The gold ecu weighed at 3.34 gm thus was a little lighter than the European ducat at 3.50 gm.

I can not find any such St. George and the Dragon coins for any French king Louis.

    :)

That isn't Saint George on the coin, it is Saint Michael the Archangel.

Then its probably the coin listed in Friedberg as "unique" Paris Museum collection. There is no picture in Friedberg.
But it says St. Michael the ArchAngel on reverse:)

    St. George and St. Michael!

I'm glad that France is well-covered with it's dragon problem.

I looked the coin up at the BnF museum's website, and it does seem to be the same one as in my book.

The guy on the first coin helped assassinate the guy on the second coin (the actual assassin was Bulgarian), I am sure you putting those two in the same post was entirely accidental;)...

I knew that Alexander was assassinated in 1934/ Paris. However no idea that Mr. Pavelič was involved in that. I do love the AV 4 Dukaten from him with his Romanian wife, Maria. Always neat to learn more history. Proves that it was never a good idea to reward Serbia for starting WW1/ by giving it more territories of ethnic groups that never wanted to be under Serbian rule. Finally n 1990s the thing fell apart/ with Serbian leaders tried for War crimes, esp. artrocities vs Croats/ Bosnians/ Macedonians. "Behind enemy lines" great movie about this.

In Marseille, not Paris, and yes, Pavelić and his Ustaše movement were involved, he actually spent a year and about 5 months in prison in Italy for his involvement in the assassination.

Yes, both the first and especially the second (communist) Yugoslavia were horrible ideas, but since it is against forum rules to discuss politics, it is best to leave it at that.

It seems that this is another coin I will have to file under the "Exists only in museums" category. :(

Since you are a fan of Spanish gold coins and I don't want to open up a new thread for something that might turn out once again to only exist in a museum, is the 1548 gold Escudo of Carlos V, the one with the Pillars of Hercules on the reverse, something which is on the market?
