I recently had been hunting for a Variety One Seated dime. The use of “variety” confused me a bit because I had thought that our use of the word variety had more to do with minor variations in die strikes… Large date/small date type variations….. We call the 1913 Buffalo with a raised denomination a “Type 1”. We call a 1917 SLQ without stars a “Type 1”….. so I was a bit confused when I was seeking the variety one dime….. Is the use of type/variety interchangeable?

Interesting Randy, I have never heard the seated Ladys being termed Varieties. Unless it is " a collector has a bunch of different varieties to choose from in the seated series"
Variety is usually year, mm and design differences within the same year.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

    No.

A Type is an intentional design change. You mentioned the 1913 Buffalo with raised or recessed mound. SLQ with chain mail or bare breast. These are types.

A variety would be a slight, unintentional change - D/S, DDO, etc.
