A really nice coin, even better in hand that is scarce and probably as nice as you’ll see:

Sorry about the lint on holder & low quality picture. Die # 7 by the way...

Looks like some machine doubling on the reverse. But it does not distract from the great looks of this coin.

Really nice looking coin. Thanks for posting. Curious about the little jagged ridge at about 3 o’clock on the reverse. Not detracting at all. Is it a die crack or something lying on the coin or slight planchet defect or something else? Appears to extend into the crown a bit.

Nice. Under the bust, in the border, what are those MML letters?

Also, I've always wondered how they determine the die number. Is there an actual number or a reference that distinguishes them?

The "MM" is actually "WW" and stands for William Wyon, the engraver. Not sure about the rest.

Ha, then the L is actually a 7 I guess! So I suppose the dies are numbered

A beautiful coin and one I would add to my collection. Congrats!

That is a die crack at 3 o'clock reverse. I love this series and only regret that there are some real "stoppers" - the 1851 in proof only is probably a 25,000+ USD coin, the 1854 and 1863 currency coins that are also prohibitive costwise.
Not to digress but some of the allegedly scarce issues are not - such as the 1862....

Then there are the 1848 patterns with the same obverse design and 9 different reverses … all very expensive coins. And some of the combos come with either a plain or reeded edge. And the pattern of the design that was used for circulation (the one pictured by the OP) was made in both silver and an extremely rare gold version. They are all 4- and 5-figure coins. If the gold one ever came to auction, it would be a 6-figure coin. Gorgeous coins, but with a big price tag!

An example is below. Sold by Heritage 8 years ago for $13K … would be a lot more today. And, no, it’s not mine.

Ah yes I bought the 1848 Godless proof Florin from Spink (like the 1849 sort of) many years ago & have several other proofs. HOWEVER mint state 1854 and 1863 are much rarer than any of the 1848 patterns with these price wise undetermined in recent years as they have not been at auction or sale to my knowledge.
