I was just about refute your post because Scott was not working at NGC ten years ago! How time flies. He was at NGC ten years ago! BTW, IMO his explanation SUCKS! I'll bet money they do that variety now. Shame on them if they don't.
I can’t see anything significant as far as doubting from your photos...if there is anything I would think it would be very minor. If you check the CONECA Master files you will see a listing for Series Doubling and one for a 72D DDO-001. I think the best was to attribute them is to look at IN GOD. The SDO-001 will have notching on the bottom right of the I in IN, among other places, and the DDO-001 will have doubling on IN GOD, see attached photos. These two photos were sent to me by Ken Glickman who has credit for the discovery of the 72D DDO-001. Larry Nienaber
Years ago when I started looking there were no online resources ( no online actually ) and that meant you had to learn to look at everything. Something I still do. It may still be useful to do this as the potential for a die to have failed or be damaged can still give hope for new discoveries. A few years back I went through my stuff and submitted a few things to CopperCoins. Some were new listings for that site , or any site. One of the best was this 1934 that is still unlisted anywhere else. http://coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1934&die_id=1934p1dr004&die_state=mds Here is the coin toner 1934 by stoneman227, on Flickr
It's beautiful! I was too negative and one should never say never. There is a chance of finding something new. Most (all?) the new people don't know what to look for. Everyone thinks they will be the lucky one and find new varieties. I used to think that way myself. I haven't found anything but a couple of 1996D Lathe Line cents, and 1 RPM out of the last four boxes (10,000 cents). I have 4/5ths of a box left downstairs though
There is new stuff out there even on old coins. Just because a coin is 44 years old doesn’t mean it might not be a new listing, it is arrogant to think otherwise. This variety was first reported in 2009 http://www.varietyvista.com/10 Walking Liberty Halves/1939DDDO003.htm (seventy years after it was minted). Just a few years ago, Larry got three (3) new listings for the 1971-D DDO Kennedy half dollars. So the coins are still out there, just because the coin was minted decades ago, don’t stop looking.
My opinion is that most of the doubling seen in your new photos is SD (Series Doubling) for the ODV-003, except for the photo of the doubling on the N of IN, which seems to match the photo of the 72D DDO-001 that I posted from Ken Glickmans’ discovery coin. Send it in to James Wiles (CONECA) for conformation. Larry Nienaber
I followed up on the suggestions to send this coin in, sent it to James Wiles for attribution. I got the coin back today with this letter from him: I see that the Variety Vista site has images for this DDO: http://varietyvista.com/12 Kennedy Halves/DDOs 1972-D.htm Thanks all for steering me in the right direction.
Looks like doubled die but has characteristics of a worn die which may show doubling in two or more diff. directions due to poor metal flow from the worn die. These are very common in most modern series coins and have no numismatic value. The "U" in trust shows this effect very clearly. It also shows possible machine doubling which also has no value, however, the bottoms of the T, and R do look similar to the DDO-001! Your coin is very unique. Just my opinion, but I,m no expert.
I agree with worn die but the pictures may be a bit deceptive, also showing some glare or reflection that resembles other forms of doubling. In hand this is much less pronounced. And I'll freely admit that I'm no expert either.
@vintagemintage Congratulations, also keep a look out for 1974 D half DDO as they can have a very similar mild doubling to TRUST. Some of them can be pretty dramatic looking though based on the die state. I've personally found a few in mint sets that dealers seem to overlook as it's not a hugely popular variety so they are out there.
Yeah, I've found around a dozen of them in the past few years roll searching, more than any other Kennedy DDO listed in Cherrypickers'. Not much premium for them other than higher MS but I save them anyway, always an interesting find
