To commemorate my 100th on CT, I thought I would play a game where everyone post any coins they want equal to but not over 100 grams. Since that can be lengthy, I ask everyone keep it to less than 10 coins. I sure some of you can do it with just one . #1 17.10g Attica 336 to 297 BC AR Tetradrachm Obvs: Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive leaves and floral scroll. Congrats! Your challenge was harder than I thought it would be, but here are mine. 10 coins, 10 different denominations, just shy of a hundred by 0.01g. From heaviest to lightest... PTOLEMAIC KINGDOM OF EGYPT, Ptolemy III Euergetes, AE Tetrobol = 43.84g THRACE, Mesembria, AR Tetradrachm = 16.65g VESPASIAN, AE Dupondius = 12.35g CORINTHIA, Corinth, AR Stater = 8.56g BYZANTINE EMPIRE, Heraclius, AR Hexagram = 6.42g GALLIC EMPIRE, Postumus, BI Antoninianus = 4.3g ROMAN REPUBLIC, Hosidius Geta, AR Denarius = 4.03g THESSALY, The Oitaioi, AR Hemidrachm = 2.75g THESSALY, Larissa, AR Obol = 0.95g IONIA, Teos, AR Tetartemorion = 0.14g 43.84g + 16.65g + 12.35g + 8.56g + 6.42g + 4.3g + 4.03g + 2.75g + 0.95g + 0.14g = 99.99g
David@PCC => hey, congrats on reaching 100 posts!! Great coins and cool idea ... oh, and sweet examples from the other members as well (chrsmat => nicely played hitting 100.00 grams on the nose) I'll check back later tomorrow and try to make a coin-effort
Congrats on post #100! Here are two coins totaling 100 gm, although the weights were from a old scale that was accurate to 0.1 rather than 0.01. 95 gm: ZEUGITANA, Carthage early 2nd century BCE AE 15-shekel, 45 mm, 95 gm Obv: wreathed head of Tanit left Rev: horse standing right, left foreleg up; solar disk with uraei above Ref: Alexandropoulos J (2000) Les monnaies de l'Afrique Antique, 103; Müller L (1861) Numismatique de L'Ancienne Afrique, 131; Luynes 3782; Jenkins GK and Lewis RB (1963) Carthaginian Gold and Electrum Coins, Royal Numismatic Society, London, pl. 28 12 5 gm: THRACE, Byzantion 340-320 BCE AR siglos, 17 mm, 5.0 gm Obv: Heifer standing left on dolphin swimming to left Rev: Incuse mill-sail pattern Ref: SNG BM Black Sea 21
Huh... two coins, now why didn't I think of that? Oh right... I still don't have a Carthage 15-shekel!
Nicely done, coin gang ... great combinations!! I found a combo of "5" coins that gets me very close ... PT-IV = 70.30 grams Anonymous As = 26.42 Lesbos = 2.48 grams Macedon Mende = 0.62 grams Ionia Ephesos = 0.17 grams ==> 99.99 grams "Keep the change"
I tried to hit 100g but ran out of room with the ten coin limit. I really don't know what these weigh since my scale is not perfectly accurate at that last digit but I reweighed them here so perhaps the errors cancel out and the total is about the 1.51g. I'll have to owe you the rest. I believe these are my ten lightest coins but in mint state the ten might weigh over 2g total. Mint state and under 0.20g is a hard combination to find. Rhegion 0.10g Syracuse 0.09g (heavier on this scales than on my old one) Athens 0.16g Phokaia 0.14g Mylassa 0.16g Mylassa 0.18g Mylassa 0.17g Mylassa 0.16g Hekatomnes 0.19g uncertain, Cilicia 0.16g
Great posts everyone. Sure we'll take you're lightest Doug. I ordered a .09g earlier this year, but it was lost in the mail.
Since folks are hitting 100g in unrestricted multiple coins How about from your BIGGEST and SMALLEST... in only TWO coins: RR Aes Grave Anon 280-276 BCE Triens Tbolt-Dolphin Rome Obv-Rev Crawford 14-3 T Vecchi... 46mm, 90.3g, (OH! and 9.3mm THICK!) Persian Achaemenid Empire Darius I 510-486 BC AR 0.11g 5mm Persian hero-king in running-kneeling position Oblong incuse Klein 758 Rare O-R.JPG 90.41g... (I KNOW that @TIF should thrash me with her Carthage monster-shekel and her smallest baby)
I'm pretty sure that my heaviest and smallest coins are both already shown above => but here they are again ... PT-IV = 70.30 grams Ionia Ephesos = 0.17 grams ... man, that lil' bugger is definitely one of my all-time favs (total winner)
Okay I am going to have a go at this with a few coins I haven't posted yet and a few I have. Nerva 97 AD = 11.7gm Domitian 85 AD=9.1gm Hadrian 132 AD=26.2 Antoninus Pius 140 AD =26.5gm Macrinus & Diadumenium 217-218 AD =11.9 Octavian 30 BC = 3.4gm Domitian 88 AD = 11.2gm 11.7 + 9.1 + 26.2 + 26.5 + 11.9 + 3.4 + 11.2 = 100gm
