This is first coin in a big trade I have worked on past two years. I am trading my butterfly collection for 8 Imperial Roman Aurei. This piece was for my North American swallowtail coll. 114d1708ba7d0f8cc9490d9cc42340bd.jpg

Yet another reminder that I should have gone into the landscaping business instead of law. Keep those awesome coins coming @panzerman , I'm living vicariously through you with those amazing gold coins.

Thanks! I really liked my butterfly/moth collection, but I could not resist an offer of eight "mint state" aurei for the balance of my (swallowtail butterfly coll./ I had sold about a third of it in past two years. I will still have my moth collection left after this deal is complete.

I had no idea butterflies were such serious business. Maybe butterfly catcher should be my side business.

Sweet trade, panzerdawg ... it's always a bit sad to trade coins that you once treasured, but at least you scored yourself an amazing new OP-winner!! (congrats)

Maximianus, eh? ... umm, here ya go (wanna trade for this cool AE29 Follis?)

    WOW.

Any Roman gold is "wow" for me, but that one happens to have a crazy-cool reverse design, too!

I LOVE that coin so much I don't know where to start raving about it.

Does that variety come in a more budget-friendly silver or bronze??:D

Awesome trade @panzerman . I believe you mentioned that you had something in the works some time ago. Great to see that it has gone through! Moving your collection from potential shelf-life delicate commodities to durables. I love it! :)

Indeed! Don't get me wrong- I'm sure butterfly and moth collections are appealing, and I know they can be interesting and visually attractive, but... yeah. No contest for me, there.

I also think gold coins will stand the test of time better. I've seen some rather sad and timeworn old butterfly collections that were literally falling apart, but they were antique collections. For all I know, modern forms of preservation are better. But still, I'd rather have the coins, regardless.

A Roman aureus (even just ONE well circulated example) is still near the pinnacle of my "someday" numismatic aspirations.

    Thanks for all wonderfull commentry!
Yes, my butterfly/moth collection was hard to let go of, all of my specimens were perfect in quality/mounting techique. I had 12,000+ specimens housed in 400 museum drawers/20 cabinets. My wife kinda told me in "a nice way" that two super $ collections were a bit much...so coins won the day! I guess I am lucky to be able to get eight FDC Aurei for balance of my swallowtail (papilionidae) coll. The gentlemen from Montreal bought a great deal of my stuff in previous deals for cash. He ran out, so he decided to part with his Roman coin collection/ 8 aurei/50 denari...all FDC. Hopefully I can also trade him for the denari! I think there are Julia Domna/Pertinax/Volusian/Philip I/Domitian/Probus/Numerian aurei still for future deals!!!!
