Tracking down the elusive 2009 coins

By now, most of us know that pretty much any 2009 dated coin except for the Cent and the NIFC Halves are difficult to find in circulation... I'm hoping this thread will shed some light as to what part of the country they are easiest to find in, and which parts are hardest.

I'm on the West coast, and the ONLY 2009 nickel or dime I have been able to find in any quantity is the 2009-D nickel. I find approximately 3.5 per box. In contrast, it usually takes me about 5.5 boxes to locate a 2009-P nickel.

Quarters are somewhat easier than dimes to locate for me, but even with them, I am still yet to find a 2009-P North Mariana Islands coin to complete my CRH modern set of quarters (1965-date).

So what are your 2009 CRH experiences, and what part of the country do you live in?

If you're having that much trouble finding them in circulation, maybe you should search eBay. Granted, you may have to pay more for them, but if that is your only choice, what can you do?

I have rolls of the cents all 4 types P&D I got from the bank. I also ahve rolls of nickels and dimes I've traded for. I don't try and keep them in circulation finds but they aren't rare.

 

Out of curiosity, what part of the country are you in?

I have no problems finding the 2009-D cents in any of the 4 types. I've got at least three rolls of all of them except the Presidency ones which I barely have a roll of. The 2009-Ps are a little more of a problem though as they didn't seem to get out here to the West coast. I only have about 1/2 roll of them total between the 4 types.

I've got about 1/2 roll of the 2009-D dimes, but only about 10 of the 2009-P nickels, and 5 of the 2009-P dimes.

 

I live on the east coast and to be honest, I've probably not yet found a full roll in total of any of the cents and very few nickels in circulation. I ended up purchasing 11 boxes of the various designs with five being the 2009P Wood splitter (Formative) , to search primarily for errors. I leaned towards early release dated boxes and was well rewarded for my cost and time. This was early on and the finds far outweighed my costs when re-selling. These boxes are now getting quite expensive on Ebay. I also purchased two rolls each of the nickels for around $12.00 a roll as I recall.

 

I live in MN and have occasionally found some of the 2009 quarters in change, mostly N. Mariana islands and Puerto Rico. I have seen a few 2009 cents with the log cabin but not any others. My mother got all 4 cent types in change and most the quarter types.

 

East Coast Northern Md/De boarder. I just started roll hunting cents this summer and no where near the rate of others on here. I think I may have gone through about $35 and have MAYBE 10 cents in p mint.

 

Out of curiosity, are your North Mariana Islands coins P mint or D mint, or both? The Log Cabin 2009 Cents are far and away the most common ones here on the West coast in my experience.

 

Glad you did well with your error searching, Tommy. The vast majority of the 2009 cents I find in circulation would grade in the EF/AU range. I find lots of BU 2008 and 2010 dated coins, but I may have a roll total of the 2009s (for all 4 designs combined)...

The 2009 nickels are indeed getting quite pricey on eBay. Even EF/AU rolls of the 2009-Ds are going for $12+. When I last saw the BID prices of BU rolls 2 1/2 months ago, it was $13 for the 2009-D, and $60 for the 2009-P. I'm guessing those figures are probably higher now.

 

Yes, the 2009P nickels now seem like a bargain. What I don't understand is the pricing on B.U. rolls of 1943 cents. Price guides have not changed in years at $60.00 and yet these commonly go for around $100.00 a roll. And the 2012 mint & proof sets are way overpriced considering their mintage totals. I missed ordering that year due to a life crisis going on but like the 1999 silver sets I think they will eventually come down. Both of these years were way overhyped, especially 1999, by the T.V. markets mostly and the 2012 by the Numismatic markets.

 

I would love to find some of those 2009-P nickels on the cheap. FYI almost all of the ones I've found in circulation don't even have any mint luster on them!

 

I've seen the 2012 Silver Proof Kennedy priced and the full set priced the same on ebay. I would think 2013 would also be a key date year perhaps?

 

As the owner of 2013 & 2014 proof sets, but not 2012, I'm waiting for the prices to go up... the mintages for 12-14 are approx 395k, 419k, 425k. Maybe it's like the 1996 Silver Eagle carrying a big premium but other low-mintage years around then are barely above melt.

As for 2009 coins... the dimes aren't impossible to find. I don't search dimes all that often and Ill find an '09 in just a few rolls worth. Quarters I still find in change sometimes and set aside if they're not too gunky or scuffed up. Pennies I do save, but 95% of what I find is P mint. If I have 3 rolls of P coins, I have 2 or 3 D coins total.

Nickels seem to be the toughest. Pretty sure I find 40s S mints or dateless Buffalos (coins with much lower mintages and 70+ years to get saved, lost, or destroyed) more often than 2009's.

 

I find a lot of 2009 quarters here in the D.C. area.

 

I live in East Texas P mint coins are a lot harder to find here. I will admit the farther ftom'09 we get the harder they are to find.

 

I live just south of boston, 09 cents are a dime a dozen, p dimes are pretty common around here, p nickels are scarce but I usually find about 1-3 of them per box. 09D nickels and dimes I haven't found any of this year though

 

Here in San Diego, I got 2 rolls of 2009-D nickels from the bank, back in 2009. Haven't really kept an eye out since...

 

You can get them by the buckle full in VA.

 

Well, make sure you keep the 2009-P nickels when you come across them. A roll of uncirculated ones goes for $60 last I saw. A roll of unc 2009-P dimes goes for about $21. I'm going to my coin dealer on Thursday and will check out their latest Coin Dealer Newsletter to see if the prices are any different now as those figures are about 2 1/2 months old.

 

Which denomination(s)? By most accounts, it seems the 2009 nickels are the hardest to find for both mints.
