What's your opinion on bringing back pre-33 coin denominations?

Recently I've been working on a new coin design for some pre-33 denomination resurrecting. I believe that pre-1933 $5, $10, and $20 could succeed in circulation if not made of gold.

Here's my concept: a design similar to the 1870 pattern silver dollar, with Liberty sitting, and instead of holding a shield and a banner, she is petting an eagle in mine. It is meant as an illustration of unity between two symbols of freedom, and the reverse would feature the Liberty Bell. The Liberty inscription would be on a shield behind Liberty.

The reverse lettering would say "United States of America" and "In God We Trust" below it, somewhat like a Peace dollar. Under it, it would say the denomination.

Each coin would weigh in grams 1/2 of the denomination number as a way of getting it to circulate, except for the $5 coin, which would weigh 4 grams, and a possible $2 coin which would weigh 3 grams.

What are your thoughts in making these denominations in the form of coins? Refer to the picture to get an idea of Liberty petting an eagle.

As a collector I'm with you 100%. The issue as I see it is getting the increasingly cashless society to accept coins vs. paper bills. Very few non collectors would know that such coins ever existed.

If a seated Lady Liberty is involved, I am paying attention. She is my favorite design..... I'll just say this. Back when the US mint released the SBA dollar, I was overseas in the Army. Nobody stateside wanted to use the SBA dollar so they sent them overseas to pay us with. Heck, a dollar is a dollar, right?..... Well, no... Not when you want to draw out forty bucks for a night on the town. My pockets felt like sandbags..... I don't think we will ever be able to convince the public that a circulating dollar design is the ticket. Much less circulating larger denominations.

Government wants to eliminate cash altogether. Electronic / crypto is controllable and trackable.

    Cash, not so much.

Think of it. If you lose your wallet, all your funds are backed up in the "cloud". No one else can spend your "money." Just like the data from your phone, your money is "secure" . . . .

And they want to enforce a social credit system. So if the government doesn't like you they can just stop you from making purchases like food. Also bye bye gun purchases :lock:

I do like the idea, but as @Dynoking and @Randy Abercrombie point out the acceptance by the general public I think will prohibit this from being done. I also think as @ZoidMeister posted is more what the government wants to do, but it certainly has its problems also. A lot of goverment control with this as @Evan8 points out, and I think this could be just the beginning.

It would be very nice, even wonderful, if we had done designs that stood for Liberty and Freedom instead of past presidents. However our elected leaders are against such things.

I like Seated Liberty designs as well, and it'd be even better when you can fit Liberty, a normal sized eagle, and the Liberty Bell all in one coin. I mean, the Franklin half dollar could do it, but the eagle was..... flexing its muscles lol!

Honestly that's against the 2nd Amendment if they ban guns, but they won't ban money as long as we have it. With that, I tell the government "Ha!"

I'd love to see it. As I keep saying, our current coin denominations are obsolete.

But the fact is, change itself is becoming obsolete. For a vast and growing majority, change is the stuff that you scoop up off the table or counter and put into a jar when you get home. Every once in a while, you take the jar and empty it into a coin counter. Or not.

If we came out with half-eagle/eagle/double-eagle coins -- heck, go ahead and issue half and full Unions -- people would just grumble that they'd rather have paper money, the same way they do when you offer them dollar coins. Unless we discontinue the lower denominations of paper money, and if we can't even do that for the $1 note, it's not happening for the 5 or 10 or 20.

Actually we need a few dozen dozen of these.

    I'll settle for just one . . . .

    Anybody got change?

And what the hail is this "glass ceiling" on currency? Why stop at $100. I think a case can be made for the reintroduction of the $500 and $1,000 notes.

Oh wait, that would go against our "eliminate cash" agenda.

I would like to see a $200 bill with Jefferson on the front and Mount Rushmore on the back. Hail, make it the Stone Mountain carving by the same guy . . . .

I think the .Gov loses money on minting coinage as it is, am I correct? I'm not advocating that position, but that is how they see it. I still don't understand the coin shortage during covid unless the US mints just shut down production.

If the .Gov ever tries to implement mandatory digital currency, you can bet they'll ban ownership of gold coinage and bullion again.

That is one recurring issue, sadly, as a lot of people collect those dollar coins. I think, though, that it'd be a good idea to make the coins and one final paper money series to close it all out. Heh, the half and full unions could have the presidential transfers!

They wouldnt be banning guns. They would just be stopping you from purchasing them in a cashless society. Like I said, they want a social credit system.
