At the Dallas Coin Club, one of our members brought an unusual piece that I haven't seen before. It appears to be a claim token for redeemed buffalo hides.

My inclination is to suspect that this is a modern fantasy piece. Any thoughts? Were there any legit frontier tokens issued by Indian Trading Agents?

Obverse: "JL Lewitt / Post Trader / Fort / Thompson // Dakota / Territory / Grant / Indian / Agency"

Reverse: "1861 / One Buffalo Robe (stylized words slanting over eachother in a block) / US / Office / Of / Indian / Affairs / License / (82)"

So, where any things like this actually used? Or is this just a fantasy piece?

I have a brass "toe tag" allegedly from the Wyoming Territory that turns out was made in the 1970s that is very similar to this one. It has "Bureau of Indian Affairs" etc on it.

That's about what I was expecting. Any idea who made your piece?
