Need advice with my CRH while going through Texas

I'm going to be driving from Denver, CO all the way down to Lubbock, TX and back. There are many small towns that will have small banks. I am hoping that I will have access to CWR and nice Teller Tray finds. In the past when I have walked into banks while traveling I just asked if the bank had rolls of half dollars. I got several BWR and only two CWR. What is a good technique or things to say to get directly to getting CWR and Teller tray loose halves? I will buy a box down there to see what it's like too. It's been so bad in Colorado the last few months that I don't even get excited when I get a box anymore. I am hoping this trip will give me a new hope. Any advice or words of wisdom would be great.

Hi, how are you? With a smile.
    (Tellers response )
I was just wondering if you might have any half dollars that you might want to get rid of?

That's about all it takes for me. Some tellers will say sure and get rid of them. Some ask if you have an account, and may or may not still give em up.

What I say is "Hi, how's it going? Do you have any half dollars?" That works. What I am trying to avoid is getting a bunch of BWR like I did on my last trip to Wyoming. I got banks that gave me a lot of BWR, all of which I was not a member of. It was nice that they did that but I am trying to get to the CWR.

That'llbe luck of the draw I guess. I'd think the small town banks probably don't order halves.

And if they come out with BWR, you could decline them. It's poor form, but it's not like you'd be going back to those banks again.

Yeah, luck of the draw is right. I am just trying to improve my chances without being rude to the tellers. My experience with getting loose halves is that one teller might not have them but others could. I try to go in during none busy hours so if one teller doesn't have them then it's easy for that teller to ask the other ones if they do.

Good point. I feel the etiquitte is bad though. Guess I'll have to ditch that.

If they bring out BWRs, just say you need like 5 dollars or whatever or just take 1 roll if they say no to a smaller amount.

You won't find anything in TX that you can't find in CO. The banks are no different.

Then ask for them, but do so politely and with a smile on your face. If they're going to make the effort to get rolls for you, what's the difference if they only get you the kind you want? If anything, anyone willing to do this for you will probably appreciate knowing ahead of time, especially if there a chance you're going to refuse whatever you do not want.

Make sure you ask if they have any in the vault if they say they don't have any. Sometimes tellers only check their own trays and don't necessarily knows what in the back. I've scored many time after an initial no, asking if they could check the vault.

True, at my bank when I have asked for halves, sometimes the teller only checks her drawer. Last time I got halves, I went through the drive through and hot a different person and they said they had a whole bunch. Ended up with 3 40%ers.

Yeah I always follow up with "do you think anyone else might have any?" And they ask around or say "well how many do you want? " that leads to "we have $260 rolled in the vault" or whatever.

So, I posted in the Results Thread and my quest was pretty good. Not a huge haul but great for me considering I found 1 silver in 12 boxes lately. This raised my spirits and will cause me to double my efforts when I get home. I have a box of halves waiting for me to pick up tomorrow night. Hopefully those will go well too. What I learned is you gotta be polite with the tellers and managers but persistent too. I was getting loose halves at places where I was dumping. I hustled til I could hustle no more and somehow hustled after that. I was fortunate that I was on a business trip and didn't have to pay for gas. My appointments were spread out so I had plenty of time too. My trip next week is to Philedelphia. I will be flying but I will still hunt while I am there. It's all about the hunt!!!
