“Sorry but that's Galba. Whoever worked at the Antioch mint got the bust wrong.” Lots of conjecture … I do not agree and will leave it at that. Have a great day tho..
@johnmilton “I had the most trouble with Vitellius on that score.” I would agree that Vitellius is also in that category. I have one that doesn’t meet the criteria but if I do ever upgrade, it will be just as hard as Otho.
So, when that happened, I have read that the bust may have been modified to a degree. Wouldn't that make the bust style a bit more rare? Did they strike the same perimeter and details on newer dies and correct the bust? Or are the modified dies more rare?
Maybe he heard it when he invited someone to one of his many banquets which he held throughout the day.
Here's my one Otho.... This one could also easily go in the "ugly coins" thread. I appreciated that they preserved Otho's face and wig, even if Securitas was decapitated! (Sorry, this is another coin I've shown repeatedly....) Here are some of the photos of it (coin "M16") published by K. Butcher & M. Ponting some years back. Although, I have to say it's not easy to recognize it!
It's the A.H. "Fred" Baldwin Collection. This coin was Lot 56 at the Baldwin's sale of his collection on 20 November 1969 in London ("Important Collection of Roman Portrait Coins"). That's definitely important information to keep track of. Also, there's a strong chance this coin has been published elsewhere too. Looks like someone paid 230 GBP for it (a lot of money in 1969!). Here's the photo, description, and cover from the Glendining catalog. It's illustrated on plate III: https://archive.org/details/catalogueofimpor00glen_61/page/3/mode/1up
