The patches on your coin look like places where some form of "debris" got between the planchet and the die. Especially the "cannon ball" hit. They are called "Struck Thrus." Even though your photos are not sharp, I see NO DIRT or damage. There may be "die chips" also.

You already know how I feel about "Struck Thru".

Maybe there was an earthquake in Harper's Ferry that damaged the building like the ANA medal below from the LA National Convention.

If I did, I forgot and old habits kicked in. What is the proper term? What do you think caused the imperfections?

Proper term? If you don't know the cause, the generic term would be "strikethrough". If you do know the cause (for example, a piece of wire) it would be "struck through wire". The only reason that the grading services use "struck thru" in every instance is just to save space on their insert.

Of course, I will get a lot of flack for this because some people don't care if they use proper English or not.

I'm really not sure. This is one of those instances where I wished I had the coin in hand to examine under a stereomicroscope.

I was sure as I posted above. "Struck Thru's." :p:D

In this case, the big one is "into" the design (no bricks) and "bright" rather than the frosted surface around it.

You should have a big advantage over the rest of us. In my experience, the folks that use a stereo scope to look at coins can usually tell right away what they see on a coin with just a photo, hand lens, or even their naked eye. ;)

Just wanted to let you guys know I never used a microscope. I took the pictures with a cell phone. You can literally see most of the things I pointed out with arrows with the naked eye.

Got some new photos and I think what most of you thought was a smudge was something else. What would this be considered?

One more thing you can definitely see it from the palm of your hand without a microscope except WHAT LOOKS LIKE A DOUBLING IN "FERRY"

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

How many coins are we seeing this on? Just one, or more?

Just one, but is this pmd? Cause it looks like something is minted on it.

But just curious what would you grade this one at? Would this be considered at least an AU?

stop using such a high magnification.

If high enough you can see anything.

    I think I see a few mis-placed atoms there

    :facepalm::rolleyes:

More members SHOULD use high magnification when asking about authenticity (especially) and characteristics like this that they see on their coins. :D
