I bought this in JA's auction here on CT. This VRBS Roma Trier from AD332-333 caught my eye because of the reverse. It depicts a she wolf nursing the twins Romulus and Remus. A very cool coin with a very cool story I can share with the Grandbabies. Now to research it a little more so I can get the story correct and the search begins for the next coin with a story.
Oh dear, I'm sorry for tempting you with all my ancient coins. Now that you've taken your first step into the dark side, you'll never escape. Muahahahaha Hey man, I'm glad you finally took your first foray into ancient coins, and from a very knowledgeable and respected source too. I was about to follow up with you, but I see you've done very well indeed. That is a beautiful first ancient.
Well I guess all I can say is what was said to me. Welcome to the dark side. Like lays can't have just 1. I started with 1 now around 50. Addictive little suckers
Ancient coins addictive? @Smojo , that is such a lie. Only 11 months ago when I bought my first ancient I stated here in the forum that "I will only buy 10 or 12 coins in the next year" and I've been able to keep that promise and show tremendous self control. I assure you, it is not addicting at all... Why it just so happens that I brought my collection home from the bank today, and as you can see, only 12 coins! No addiction here... Math was never my strongest subject, so I may be off from my goal of 12 by a coin or two. PS: I know I'm far behind on making new labels. I will work on it this weekend. It's just been rough with all the work, but that's why I brought the collection home this weekend.
Nice, I even recognize a few. I don't really trust the bank or anything tied to our or any government for that matter. I do trust Colt. Smith & Wesson & Ruger even ol Winchester though. And my black dog security system, lol.
Hell yeah. Be careful my friend, I've already gotten a warning from MOD tonight. Must be that time of the month
@MKent , great Ancient Coin to start with! She-Wolf of Rome! My She-Wolf Statue... My She-Wolf coins... 3 Roman Republics and 3 Roman Imperials
Oh and @Sallent, I did let that slide past on JA's past auction. I gotta say you nailed it on how much it would go for. BUT I almost landed an OK one this morning g on FAC. It had 3 hrs to go no bidders. So I put $1 on it just to see. Down to the last hour it went for $10. I couldn't believe it.
Agreed. My latest security addition is the THE JUDGE, because who doesn't need a revolver that fires 410 shot? Lol. At any rate, one of the things that surprised me most when I first started collecting ancients was how affordable some of the common types were - much more affordable than the 19th-century US coinage I was previously collecting. My first coin was a Falling Horseman, but an VRBS ROMA followed very quickly, maybe the second or third.
I have several, built a few, even my wife built one, and I love my Saiga Arsenal Ishmash factory Avtomat Kalashnikova47 7.62x39 For handwork... Glocks be excellent. I love the Judge, but I am personally lusting after a S&W The Governor. Everyone knows being a governor is better than a judge.
Very nice example!! The 'story' behind each coin always fascinates me and makes each far more interesting than even the wonderful devices themselves that immediately grab our attention. Understanding the 'message' and placing the coin within a specific historical perspective always enhances the appeal of ancients for me---each communicating something, even if it is mostly 'Imperial/Dynastic Propaganda' LOL Here's a bronze from Troas with Tyche and the 'suckling wolf'--one of my initial favorites that I purchased when I returned to collecting ancients in 2015 (and fairly cheap as well): @Sallent ----I think we had the same math teacher or a close relative LOL
