Got notified today on this 1888 Morgan. My 3rd gold CAC of the year for 2016, but once again, not an expensive coin. Oh well, still pretty cool! Here's the pic before it got stickered. Oh yeah and my MS62 OGH 20 cent piece (also pictured) got a green sticker (The one Gary Atkins told me at the ANA had hairlines on the obverse... pffft!).
Not sure. In hand, it looked to me like one of those notorious AU58/MS62 sliders. I just figured since it was cheap and in an OGH, that it was a good buy if it would happen to get a gold sticker. And it did!
I saw a rattler 1812 Classic Head Large Cent on eBay years ago. The holder said AU55, but it was clearly MS63. Wide I saved pics of it. Of course it had a gold sticker and it was priced at MS63 money. It wasn't listed for very long before someone bought it. That coin had the biggest spread between holder grade and actual grade that I have ever seen. CAC should have given it a Uranium Sticker!
For the 20 cent, where did he see hairlines? In the field to the left of Liberty's head? It's hard to tell what's on the coin and what's a scratchy holder.
It's a pretty decent strike - cotton bolls, talons and lower leaves all nicely defined - but the amount of surface chatter which doesn't lend itself to known artifacts of Mint handling would leave me having to assume it's a barely-worn circulated example. Probably one which knocked about in pockets/bags/cashboxes after release more than being physically handled by fingers. Strict technical detail seems AU58ish, but I could see it being netted to 55 due to the marks. In truth, at least based on these images I can't quite buy it getting a Gold Bean. With that said, there's only one set of images and we all know how harsh digital imagery is on such things; I might change my mind with the coin in-hand. And the 20C is To Die For™.
