Here we go, it's that time again, step right up one and all to Guess The Grade! I would really like to hear what everyone thinks about this one....it's a nice coin, I think it was dipped many moons ago and has started to retone (more attractively on the obverse than on the reverse), but that is personal preference. I'm not saying it isn't in a details holder, maybe it is? The coin resides in an NGC holder and that's about all I shall say
My first thought was AU53. Then I saw the reverse, and thought what you were thinking about an old dip/retone...so I am on the fence. One side, AU53. Other side, AU Details. But I don't think you'd have mentioned your opinion about the dipping if it was in a Details slab...so I'll lean over to 53.
Man... tough, but I'm going to go AU55 weak strike. I don't think it's in a details holder from the photo's.
You guys are generous! No breast feathers or tail feathers on the eagle, yet mid-AU? Oh well, maybe you're right. That's what's fun about this game!
I noticed that, but as I am in a meeting right now it had to be quick and that's why I just posted the PCGS photograde picture as a reference. I agree and you're right, the strike quality may be different for each year or type of SLQ.
But I agree. Not AU. Detail could be a VF25, in fact. Remember, key date 1923-S coins are graded VF20-30 with only 1.5 digits of the date visible! Same goes for 1921's! The strikes were terrible. The design flawed, so we're left with examples like this.
