https://www.ebay.com/itm/305378539486 Please help report this fake coin in a fake NGC holder (real cert number). I reported it and eBay "investigated" it and found it to be okay. Right. This is a relatively new seller listing fakes under zero feedback accounts with a Poland address.
Reported, I have noticed recently that eBay will only take down a listing if a large group of people report it. I dont know why. The same thing happened on my thread about a different fake coin. It took over 10 different reports before eBay would even look at it. Here is the link. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/fake-pcgs-1916-d-dime.410083/
Yeah. It's crazy. I told them I'm a literal expert and have consulted for NGC on Austro-Hungarian coinage and it's 100% fake. They don't care. They tell me a "customer service representative" reviewed it and it's fine. Sure.
What are you guys using for a reason? I wonder if that matters and I can't find a combination that allows you to select that it's a fake.
I have no expertise with this coin, but just comparing the label to the one pictured on NGC's site, they're obviously different. Seems like an eBay CSR could easily do the same.
Not sure I should spell it out here, but there are a lot of things wrong with the holder (not just the label) and also the coin itself. The obverse is particularly egregious.
I reported the listing to the NGC fraud department, and that this Poland based seller has been listing fakes on zero feedback throwaway accounts. Perhaps eBay will listen to NGC directly, but I dont know how long that will take so please report this auction. Bid is already up to around $500 on what would be a $1500 coin if it was real and I don't want to see someone take a bath on this.
Yes those are some, but not all of the issues with the holder. Also, if you look at the obverse of the coin, the look of the bust is entirely wrong. It's a modern low-relief Chinese copy. The counterfeits all have this wrong look (5 corona, 10 corona, and 20 corona).
Yeah I was hoping a CSR would just pull up the cert validation on the NGC site and notice the numerous obvious discrepancies but clearly that was expecting too much. I miss when eBay actually paid for expertise in tagging counterfeits, now they are rampant and eBay doesn't employ anyone with the skill to identify them even when the counterfeit listings are literally being handed to them by experts.
Sorry I wasn't clear - I meant when you report the listing. It gives drop downs for a reason, what did you chose? I can't find a combination that allows me to mark it as counterfeit.
Prohibited and Restricted Items -> Stamps, currency, and coins -> Replica coins, replica paper money, and replica stamps Doesn't have the same ring as counterfeit, but essentially the item is illegal because it is a replica that doesn't bear a proper COPY stamp. Though in this case it's clearly sold with the intent to be fraudulent.
Perfect - Reported Side Note - I can't believe people bid that much money on an account with zero feedback.
Ebay is the pits when it comes to problems. Several years ago I purchased an older dual sport motorcycle for a restoration project. It had Ebay Motors guarantee. The seller sent a title that wasn't even for the right motorcycle. Ebay told me it didn't matter, as long as they sent me the title to something, even though the bike I paid to have transported to my home wasn't the motorcycle listed on the title. The seller laughed at me and said "tough luck". Thankfully the state the seller was in frowns on people selling a large number of motorcycles (had multiple sales on Ebay) without being a licensed dealer. They intervened, fined the heck out of the seller for operating as a dealer without a license, and got a good title for me. Turned out okay for me, but Ebay was zero help.
This is exactly why I've never even considered buying coins, especially from online platforms. I'm just an average guy, I wouldn't know which coin and container (barcode & prongs) is fake or real.
I would never buy something high value on ebay, especially not unless it was from an established dealer. Update - eBay says no action taken on my report of the listing (AI determined it to be ok). This is the frustrating part, as long as the sellers can fool the automated bots, they'll keep getting away with it.
Just got this in an email from eBay. Edit: I'm confused now... the listing appears to still be active?
