1978 Copper Washington Quarter

I really do want to know what the person said the coin could be because I must be missing something, maybe I'm looking at something I've never seen before. At first I thought you may mean it was missing clad layer and this coin is not that. I am not an error expert by no means so I can't say for sure it isn't an error but from the little exp I have it looks like environmental damage. Good luck and if you decide to send it to someone I suggest ANACS they seem to be the least expensive reputable coin grading service.

In my humble opinion, based on the photos provided all I see is PMD which stands for Post Mint Damage.

Please don't take offense to some of the comments in this thread, keep in mind they are trying to help.

 

First, Michele, I'd want to know the credentials of your "coin guy". I used to think I was a hotshot "coin guy" as far back as the 1970's but I had no idea then how much I didn't know. I now know 100 times or more what I knew then and I now am sure I have at least that much more to learn. I'm 61 and will surely be dead before I can learn what some others you "diss" here already know. Trust me, the 1978 quarter is a "hot mess" and not an error.

I am at least knowledgeable enough to have received an award from past ANA President Walt Ostromecki as one of Pennsylvania's two Numismatic Points of Light. Does that make my opinion right? No. But it gives me a "more likely to be right" edge over some unnamed "coin guy".

Nothing annoys real coin guys more than "errors" which are not. Their owners dig in their heels excessively.

@coinzip. I always appreciate the ambassadors who step in... more experience and knowledge isn't a free pass for pelicans and absolute opinion to dismiss any other.

Here are the facts at this point. When PCGS provides their conclusion...ill share it.

the weight is 1/10th under, copper, 3 distinct areas of double die, reverse has a large C and obverse extra numbers. There is a combination of both mint error and post mint damage. He had not seen one coin with the combinations and could be one of a kind...and important to conclude with PCGS to determine

 

PCGS will have a hard time getting past the physical damage on the coin. It MAY end the analysis right there and never consider anything more. Maybe not, but I'd be surprised if they go any further.

Hm. I hope the coin guy who suggested PCGS isn't simply counting on getting some bucks from his surcharge for submitting a coin.

 

I am amazed that ANY PCGS dealer would consider this piece worthy of sending in. If it's true, it lowers my opinion of PCGS even more, if that's even mathematically possible.

 

@Michele Bigness these coins were in my aunts house during the recent flooding in Baton Rouge, as you can see, they all look copper. This happened after only a couple of days under water. These guys sometime have a strange way of saying things, but they are telling you the truth when they say that that your quarter is nothing more than environmentally damaged. I did a joke thread about a similar one a few years ago, but I can't seem to locate the thread. Long story short, save your money on the PCGS submission.

 

I once looked at a used car that went through Katrina and ended up in PA. It was a nice cleanup job, but under the rugs, she was a wee bit rusty.

Hope all is improving down there, Kirk.

 

Everything is getting back to normal, but cleanup will take some time. Had LSU not looked so horrendous today, it would be better.

Sorry Kirk, you're a great individual, but any time an SEC team takes it on the chin, especially from a Big 10, no 11, no 14, team, I smile just a little.

 

Doesn't really matter the SEC will likely have the last laugh...as usual.

 

Yeah, more likely than not, but now they have to earn it on the field. Remember, the playoff winner the first year of the current system was a #4 seed and wouldn't have even gotten a shot in the previous system. Of course, 'Bama was a #1 last season.

I see the Big "14" didn't really go out of their way to schedule top competition this week, Wisconsin excepted.

This is not like you Chris as I seriously doubt that ANYBODY have ever examined even 1 Billion coins. (1 coin per second, 24/7 for 31+ years)

As for the OP and the subject coin? Hopefully, she will get an expert opinion and then post the results for all to see.

I'd recommend CONECA, who, IMO, are true variety/error experts.

Report back all the results.

It's how people learn.

 

This is my latest "Just Cause". How many times have newbies come here exclaiming that they have never seen one like it. So, I have to ask, "How many billions of clad coins have been struck in the last 45 years?"

I really hope she does let us know what PCGS has to say, but do you really think that they will grade it?
